I don't have a pic yet, but we had to do surgery on my Wyandotte yesterday. I don't know what she got her toe caught in but it was broken almost off and just hanging by a thread. We removed the toe and she seems much happier now. Poor little Whiney Dot!

It's been a tough week for the chickens of the Forum. DA- would be fascinating to see pictures and hear more about how you actually doctored her. How do you fight against infection on a chicken's foot as it heals?

Well, that's the thing egrogan, I don't really know. I didn't notice when she injured her foot, Wyandottes are fairly stand offish and not exactly eager for interaction. She's one of the "eye candy breeds" that I just like to have around. I noticed the other day that she was walking funny, limping and throwing her foot way out in front when she stepped. That got my attention, the good old Lameness Flag got thrown, and I grabbed her up and discovered the broken and almost severed toe. It was pretty much already healed, the toe was just flopping. So we brought her inside, wrapped her with a towel and snipped the skin connection and took the toe the rest of the way off. We cleaned the foot area good with Hibiclens before and after, but it was already pretty much healed, no blood at all. A few days out and she's walking fine.

I LOVe chickens. Growing up we had the chance to own some, and it was amazing waking up every day to go through a egg hunt for fresh eggs. Would love to own some again one day.

    Lots of new pictures!

Here are some new pictures of the chicks- getting really big, their combs are almost ready to take off and I can see wattles coming soon too. They are a mix of Golden Laced Wyandottes and Golden Comets:

This one has the prettiest head/neck feathers:

They are roosting on anything they can find:

    Still have some baby fluffiness

Lost one of my peepers to a black rat snake either late last night or early this morning.

Found the snake in the coop this morning with a distinctive bulge in its middle, and one of my peepers gone. It wasn't big enough to eat a full grown hen, but it got one of the two chicks.

I was hoping the adult chickens would go after it but they were just walking around clucking for breakfast, so I dispatched it myself.

I honestly don't mind losing an egg or two to a rat snake since they're more beneficial than harmful, but I can't having it eating the youngsters. Fairly large snake too, at a little over 5 feet long.

Oh, Speed Racer, that sucks. ): I lost 3 of my chickens to who knows what(I think someone stole them.) My coop is divided into two halves. Two big chicks on one side. Three little chicks on the other. How could something(I have never in my years of living here seen a snake) take one chicken from one side, and two chicks from the other? No signs of a fight, no feathers, etc. Just irritates the crap outta me.

Anyways, here's Foxy(Silkie) and Willow(EE) enjoying a dust bath together a couple days ago. Wherever Foxy is, Willow is there right up her butt LOL. They're cute.

Speed Racer and FlyGap like this.
