Sooooo... I ended up at the feed store today and came back with 2 Cuckoo Marans.

Other than the fact they are LOUD (and living in my dining room as it's 35 outside), they're pretty darn cute.

They are supposed to lay chocolate brown eggs so kiddies named one Chocolate and the other Fudge.

Cuckoo marans lay medium brown eggs. The really dark ones are from black copper marans. Welsummers lay really dark ones, too. My cuckoo lays light milk chocolate colors. I am wanting to get one that lays semi-sweet chocolate (REALLY dark brown) eggs.

I wish mine would lay eggs that were chocolate. Not the color. The flavor!

we got 2 roosters and a hen. We are unsure of the breeds, so if anyone wants to take a guess then go a head!

First Is Falcor. He is our biggest Roo. He has semi feathered feet. But I think he is a rhode island red?

Then there is our small white roo. His name is marshmellow. And he has SUPER feathered feet. I would say he is a cochin. But I am unsure.

And then our pretty little hen. I have no guesses on her breed. But she is tiny.

Baby, Sparta, Carmen, Henry, Hooch, Mercedes, Butterscotch

They are so cute! I don't think your rooster is a Rhode Island Red. He could be a cross. I am pretty new to chicken breeds, but I used to keep the RIR's and they looked a little different.

Agree. The big rosster is not an RIR. The comb is different and they do not have feathered feet. Looks to be a Brahma mix based upon the comb, color, and amount of leg feathers.
The smaller white roo looks like a banty/banty mix with normal size White Rock or Leghorn. (Bantams are minatures of their normal sized counterparts and people call them "banty" much like we say "minis" in the horse world) I can't get a good feel for his size from the pictures.
The hen most sure appears to be a bantam hen. What type of bantam exactly, I'm not sure.
Pretty birds though. :)

The new issue of Hobby Farm (Mar/Apr) came out and there is a good article with supply list and instructions for a small chicken tractor.
(Disclaimer: I urge everyone to go and buy the magazine and ignore my treading upon copyright whatevers...)
That said, I thought perhaps a posted a pic of it might help.

The other pics are of my girls doing what they do best- working a nicely aged compost pile!
And of course, the diva turkey hen who was pissed that no one informed her of the photo shoot and she wouldn't let me leave until she was properly adored by the camera.

Your girls on the manure pile could be a photo at my barn!!! In fact I had to look twice!

I love having the chickens around to turn my manure into dirt quicker.. I do wish they would leave the manure pile "piled" up. It would be so much easier to get into the dump truck for my neighbor who composts if it was piled instead of scattered!!

My Cuckoo Marans

It's way too cold outside or in my insulated garage so they're living in the dining room (as it has tile floors). Today's project is to find the mesh lid from the lat batch of chickies as these are obviously done being good lil chicks that stay in their bin.
