Then I've got 8 of these black and yellow things. The first four have almost solid black heads. The second 4 are more "marked" on the heads. And I just now noticed that two of the chicks in the second pic have feathered legs, so those two are probably brahmas..

No idea, either, on the chicks. Please remember to post pictures when they start getting some feathers in - it'll be interesting to see them grown up.

Most likely Brahmas as Cochin peepers look a little different, although both have feathered legs. I love the Cochins; looks like they're wearing feathered pantaloons!

I do have to say though, that I'm a big fan of Buff Orpingtons. Lovely, calm birds, especially the roos.

I have 3 RIR girls, and they're much more feisty than the Cochins or Orps.

My RIR is definitely in charge of the flock. It's so funny to see the other girls look to her for "permission" - when to eat, when to go out, etc. The pecking order is alive and well in my yard. As silly as it sounds, having chickens and watching their flock dynamics has actually taught me a lot that extrapolates to horses and watching them in the herd.

My RIRs (or production reds) have always had nasty dispositions. Mean to the newcomers, mean to the chicks, I even had one PULLET that would stand the dog down AND run up the back of my leg...

When my kids were little, we had Rhode Island Reds and they were gentle. My daughter rocked them to sleep every night when they were little.

I've gotten all mine from the same hatchery .. it could be their strain of nasty-ass RIRs .. lol

My RIR girls aren't especially nasty, but they're much more vocal and objectionable about things than the Cochins or Orps.

A friend has a young RIR roo that she's been trying to give away, but I won't willingly take on a roo from that breed. I did take her young Orp roo, and I already have a Cochin roo.

I've learned through trial and error that I prefer Cochins and Orps to just about any other breed, temper wise. I like others for looks and egg production but for just 99% sweet birds, I'll take a Cochin or an Orp any day in the week. NO roos here, period.
