My kids were gifted an incubator for Christmas (not by me!) and I managed to kinda dissuade them from trying... until this week.
The neighbors freakin mutt herded Fluffy McFluffy until she dropped dead of a heart attack. This of course meant I had two hysterical children and in an effort to get SOME sleep that night and thinking that I was safe because the other Polish hen basically never lays eggs, I told them the girls they could try the incubator for a replacement IF we ever got another Polish egg (easy to pick out, only laying bantams here).
Since this is MY life, Speedy our other Polish chicken promptly laid an egg the next morning (dang chicken!!) and I now have a Polish egg, what I think is a Black Sex Link and somebody's (Buff Brahma? Rhode Island red?) brown egg in the incubator.
I really don't want chicks.... I really, really don't. It's 10 degrees out so they would be living IN my house. The chicken coop was already borderline crowded, I really prefer pre-sexed chicks, we already have 4 Roosters and every last nasty lil Roo is LOVED (not by me :-x) and cannot be made into stew.
Next problem... boy will these be some MUTT chickens! Roosters are Polish, Frizzle, Wyandotte and something of which I have no clue..... horrid annoying lil thing with feathery feet that hides behind an object and darts out to peck my legs.
/sigh... guess we will see in 21 days what, if anything the girls end up with.
