I have heard that a quality dressage saddle is supposed to work, also. I haven't tried it, just what I have heard. I went looking for a nice used dressage saddle.

ROFLMBO I can get a new gaited saddle fitted and finished for less than a quality used dressage saddle. But I honestly don't like most gaited saddles. They don't allow my back to sit comfortable.

So, I am looking for a nice used AP English saddle. I'll try it and see where it leads. Rascal is a narrow withered beasty with odd shoulders, so this ought to be fun LOL.

I really don't want to fork out a ton of money for a new saddle until I know he is going to remain sound under saddle. That will take time. Not to mention the fact whatever I buy now will, most likely, have to be replaced in 6 months when he gets more muscle.
*sigh* The joys of riding are costly.

I miss you Rascal. Every day, all day.

Thanks for the Dixieland endorsement. I'm definitely leaning that way. My husband thinks he'd like the Steele.

I will put my 2 cents in, in case you are interested.

I have a Henry Miller saddle. They come in different styles; mine is a Buena Vista Plantation Saddle, that was made for gaited horses, specifically Walkers. And even though my horse is very high withered, it fits him perfectly.

They come with many options. You can get 2 different trail models, an endurance model, or go English or Plantation. I got the stirrups that hang "front"; they way your foot goes. (Even though most saddle makers turn the fenders, my knees still hurt. Just adding that extra piece of leather so the stirrup hangs true, made a world of difference for me!) They come with or without horn, color choice of black, brown, chestnut, or combination, and special tooling. Best part is; saddle with breast collar and bridle came to around $1300. ALL leather. I don't think you can beat the price for the quality.

Just something you might want to consider! Good luck!
