Competition Report

Last weekend we participated in the first U.S. Sela De Ouro in Ocala, FL. This event, sponsored by the U.S. Mangalarga Marchador Assn., follows the three part format used in Brazil (with some minor modifications).

First, we rode an almost 11 mile trail course at the FL Horse Park. The second part is a Gait and Conformation analysis. Finally, there is a Functional Test (a simple obsticle course is run; this is a timed event).

Dr. Tiago de Resende Garcia (Chief of Judges for the ABCCMM in Brazil) and Dr. Kate Moura da Costa Barcelos (an Inspection Technician for the ABCCMM) were the judges/coaches for the event.

Twelve horses competed in the event. We did quite well, earning the Champion Stallion and Mare in Gait and Conformation. We were "pack" performers in the Functional Test. And we were dead last in the Trail Course (we learned this was a timed event afterwards ). Still Ritmo AJ, our stallion, went sixth overall and my wife's mare, Amora, went reserve champion. Next year we'll practice more.
