No idea how it's supposed to be done, but this works for me and my horse:
Rack - sit deeper on your bum, move your legs back about 3 inches and if he didn't start by that or if it's mixed with trot or too much pace; put the lower legs to his sides. Leave the reins long, he usually doesn't need them.
Trot: lean forward a little and sit les on your bum.. kinda. X)
But he still as that horrible racers trot the first rounds arund the arena, and we're still working on pretty much everything :) But that's how we get the gait we want.
Always keep your head up, but be careful to keep your nose at a friendly level.
