How to get my light palomino to look more golden?

I have a light palomino and my friend just got a new palomino for Christmas and it is golden and dappled even this winter. I am wanting to know if there is anything that I can do to make my palomino look more golden by the time he sheds out this spring?

I don't think so. It is just all a matter of genetics. Some palis are so pale they are mistaken for white and others are so dark they are mistaken for brown or even black horses. So long as he's healthy, shiny, and clean, that's all you can really ask for.

Thank you, I noticed last spring my horse turned very golden. He was like that most of the summer. I am hoping he will turn golden again this year. I had heard something about giving dark horses paprika in their feed may help them to turn darker or keep them dark. Have you heard of it? I am wanting to do something to help but not hurt him.

I know how you feel - my palomino is the same. Last year his winter coat was really really light, almost white. This year, his winter coat is a lot darker (this is only my second winter with him.) Last year his summer coat shedded out a lot dark than his winter coat. So, I'm hoping this year he will be even darker yet But I doubt he will. There is a supplement called Gold as Sun, but if your horse is already getting good nutrition, I doubt you would notice much of a difference. And I think you need to feed it before they shed out in the spring. It's been said that the main ingredients are paprika and I think seaweed. Soo, I've been trying the paprika too Probably won't do anything magical like I'm hoping, but I thought it'd be worth a try too.

When do you start your horse on paprika? How much do you give him? How long does it usually take before you notice a difference?

We put our horses on paprika, my mare is a light palomino and now her hair is shedding out from winter and underneath is a nice golden colour.

You have to keep them onit to keep the colour, and start small to introduce it bc it is a spice, but it does work well, our reds turned RED, our Blacks turned Blue Black, my pally is golden and our bays are mohogany

Just a word of warning if you show. Paprika will show up and cause a positive drug test.

I wouldn't expect any severe color changes. It might help the color slightly, but it isn't going to cause a drastic change in the coat color. Some horses are just genetically lighter then others.

Yes, if you're in USA and showing don't do it.

Canada is different and it is not tested here...at least in the TWH anyways

If you're just doing it for fun and don't show then have 'ater

The reason it is tested in USA is bc it is a pain reliever for hroses if given high doses (like athletes get cortizol (sp?) shots. And also it heightens their sensitivity.

Again, you need more than 1 tsp a day for that to work, but they test for those reasons.

I've got a palomino stallion. He darkens slightly and lightens slightly with the changes in season. It's what he does.

Many years ago I had a palomino Walker. She was the color of newly minted gold coin in the summer and would turn almost white in the winter. It's what she did.

If I'd wanted to change these things my only options would have been RITT dye or Miss Clairol.

I use this stuff: Color Enhancing Horse Shampoos (3 of 6) - GOLDEN PALOMINO

It works really well, it really brought out his colours.
