Three gaited and five gaited are terms used with American Saddlebreds. Three gaited means the horse does three gaits, which are walk, trot, and canter. No different than a QH. Most Saddlebreds are three gaited. Five gaited is when the horse can walk, trot, canter, and perform the two trained gaits which are the slow gait and rack.

Saddleseat rules I would believe are breed specific, so check your breed rules. The seat is pretty much for the misfit breeds, or at least is treated as such. There is no all encompassing set of rules that all types of horses who use the saddle use. Yes, basic horsemanship, equitation, and attire, are used, but there are vast differences I have seen in going from a Saddlebred show, to a rocky show, to a TWH show, and so forth.

Contact you breed registry and they should be able to point you to or send you a rule book.

I have a friend who breeds Rockies. If you would like, post a couple questions and I will send her a FB message.

And this is the immortal Skywatch, 5 Gaited WGC and a wonderful horse to watch in the ring. Also shows the horses competing against him in class to some degree. I've put horses in the ring against him and it was a battle royal.

Whoops! Don't know how I managed to double post one video and miss the other one.

I too loved Skywatch but my favorite 5 gaited horse ever was still Imperitor. That horse gave me goose bumps. Skywatch beat him at the trot hands down but the slowgait... WOW! Imperitor would just rock back and LIFT. He was class, elegance, POWER. Ahhh, memories. I can still feel the blood pumping through my veins remembering that horse.

I am looking for a 5 gaited saddlebred now to train for hopefully park classes! Saddleseat is such a blast to ride. I ride my friend's NSH mare that was a 1/2 away from the AHA national top ten over 15 years ago, and there is so much power in her! Powerful beauty is how I would describe it. Hope you have a great time in the saddleseat world!
