Shy is a foxtrotter bought on August 9 last year. She was looking heavy, but nothing too bad..
That was picture made about week after, on my backyard. I was too lazy to move the lawn
So about two weeks ago I was visited =by a friend, who was breeding AQH and Arabians. She wanted to saw gaited horse. She looked at Shy, checked her udder and said" but this girl is pregnant!". I was in shock how something like that got overlooked. But then since, her belly started to round more and more, udder got full of colostrum and last two days vulva got relaxed with some liquid going out.
I didn't know she is pregnant when I was buying her, and I suspect the previous owner did not know either-I think she would tell me such thing?
Now she looks like that..Just in case i wrapped her long and thick tail.
Picture from today morning
The suspect father is the paint, gaited 17 y old pony that also belonged to the ex owner.
So lately I dont sleep well, expecting every morning to find 4, not 3 horses. I hope she will take care of the foaling by herself, but got a bag ready. The future name of the foal will be Chinook, unexpected like this wind
If dad is chestnut pinto and mom is black baby can be chestnut, black, possibly bay/brown depending on hidden genes. Also possibility to get some of dad's pinto coloring of course.
She looks JUST like my MFT (gelding). Crazy as I haven't seen other MFTs that looked a lot like him!
She does look pretty fat despite baby lol. Do you have any idea of a due date?
Nope. Like I said, I was said about her pregnancy about two weeks ago! But she progressed from transparent to opaque colostrum, and ver vulva relaxed. She didn't have much appetite today morning and I thought it will be today according to FAQ Signs and Stages of Foaling
i don't see any foxtrotters around. I live in Amarillo, TX where 95% horses are AQH. The other 5% are thoroughbreds, some other, non gaited breeds. My farrier says she has 700 horses to take care of. There is 5 walkers and 3 Foxtrotters, including Shy and Babe, my walker.
These were her sale photos
I fell in love with her long reach. She was the best spent 1300$ , and her foxtrot is very smooth.
And my three horses together. Shy is in the center, rescue gelding Jerry , gaited too on the left and Babe, the walker, on the right.
Sorry for horse porn..
Picture done on 1/10/17
She is following me lately, demanding scratches and attention. I couldnt even clean pasture!
but nothing happens now. I ate my fingernails already and starting toenails!
When I saw her on Craigslist in Lubbock I decided I had to have her! She was priced for 1300, 14 y old mare, and the other nearest gaited horse was another fox trotter in Wichita Falls for several thousands. I spend whole evening trying to convince husband why I need third horse. I was crazy about her! Gaited horse, so rare in this area, and for such low price!
We went there next day, with the trailer. Riding her was short, I knew I am taking her. Owner was selling because she didn't have money to raise any shelter for her two horses, and didn't want another winter just in blankets. I understood her so well. I was building horse barn by myself, so I would save on contractors and provide shelter. Last months I was building roofed area as protection from sun and enclosed shed on the right side of roofing , for bagged food and supplements. Babe became and expert in opening horse trailer where I kept food before. In plans is further rebuilding, adding another stall to the building, on the left, roofed area in front and on the side of the barn plus bigger shed for equipment storage.
Thats the view from today morning. I had to put Babe the Walker on a lead to brush her mane. Sigh.
Shy's udder
When I opened corral, both horses (Jerry prefers warm barn) decided to go to the hay ring
Have you had a vet check her? Her udder is not really not large enough to make me think that she is imminent and if she is leaking fluid from her vulva (that is not normal except for a mucuos plug just before) she could be having complications such as placentitis.
I tend to err on the side of caution with my mares, which sometimes is not needed, but has saved quite a few foal and mare just by me being suspicious.
I want to, but I need help with her to put her to the trailer. I am waiting for husband to return from his trip. Also, I think, with placentitis her belly would move all around when she is eating or drinking. And when I press where the baby is/would be from hard, sticking out things, after short time are indentations.
Why do you think placentitis would make her do that? That isn't symptoms at all.
Typical signs are milk coming out of a small udder, unusually early. (She does not look large enough to foal right now. IMHO ) And leaking from the vulva. Or a dead foal presenting.
I have treated multiple cases with varying results. They are also more likely to have a red bag delivery so you HAVE to be watching!!!
^I think the OP was saying she does NOT due to those symptoms, possibly as a confusing of placentitis meaning she is not pregnant? (Since she has those symptoms she is pregnant and as such does not have placentitis)
I think it's good to get her checked regardless, always a good first step.
She has own store with horse stuff and is there whole days. The eraliest she is off is Sunday and I dont think wet is working then. Husband will be on Friday.
We are still waiting. Her belly lowered last days.
I am too sick to do much by myslef now, got sinus and throat infection. I just keep feeding and watching every day. And last days are high wind with sandstorm. Yuck.
