SSH/TWH Showing Questions

Hi All-

I purchased my first Spotted Saddle Horse a little over a year ago and I'd really like to start showing him at rated shows. I've taken him to a couple little local shows and he always does great. I grew up showing American Saddlebreds and because this is my first SSH, there are lots of things I need to learn!

My horse is triple registered with TWHBEA, SSHBEA, and RHBAA. Given this, what would I show him in? SSH or TWH classes or both? If both, can you show in TWH and SSH classes at the same show? My horse is able to rack, but I'm not as interested in getting into racking-type classes. Also, how do inspections with DQP's work?

I'm interested in showing him in trail pleasure. How do I need to address my reins? What bit would you recommend?

My horse has a naturally low head-set (I swear he thinks he's a QH!). What type of headset do judges look for in trail pleasure?

Any input ya'll have would be fantastic. I've searched for rule books on the internet and have not been successful. Thank you so very much!

It depends on what kind of showing you want to do. If you want to be more into the "natural" way of going, no stacks, pads or heavy shoes, you'd want to contact FOSH (Friends Of Sound Horses) and ask for their rule books. They also give clinics and you'll learn alot.

If you're into the big lick look, bits they use are different, much longer shanks, the training is different...etc. What kind of showing your horse did in the past will tell you alot. I know this is late in coming, but I haven't been on the bb for a while and I see I'm the only one to respond.

Check out FOSH, or Anita Howe, there's some really good video on her web site about how the horse should travel along with her verbally explaining it. Bestest of luck

You're welcome. Don't forget to keep me posted on what you decide, etc.

Both FOSH and WHOA have their rule books online. Reading those rule books was incredibly helpful and I'm so glad you recommended them!

I even watched a couple youtube videos of Anita Howe's clinics. Cool stuff!

I'm looking at showing my SSH in western trail pleasure. He does really well with trail obstacle classes, so we may do that, too!

Thanks again for all of your help!
