Why do you love gaited horses ??

Please tell me why you love gaited horses. Experiences with them?

I am looking at buying my first horse, a spotted saddle horse. I am 41 and a heavier rider. I do have back problems and believe I will enjoy riding a gaited horse over a non gaited. I plan to do a lot of trail riding.

I love them because they have energy. At least the ones I've been around (Missouri Fox Trotters and TWH's). Of course I love Arabians for the same reason.

And the smoothness is a definite plus! But my girl isn't that set in her gaits, so she does some rough things too. It's her energy that I appreciate the most.

I'm a heavier rider too. And all I do is ride trails.

I don't ride gaited horses very often but occasionally I do get to ride this lovely Tennessee Walking Horse gelding. He's so much fun! He's got the best attitude about whatever you ask of him and he's super smooth, of course. Not spooky, and always willing to try new things.
Good luck with finding your perfect horse!

I have ridden SSH, TWH, and RMH/KMH. I also have a bad back so the smoothness is a huge plus, but I have to say I absolutely love the attitude I have encountered in the vast majority. Very willing, lovable horses with wonderful temperaments. Not to say that other horses don't have great temperaments. They're fun to ride, flashy and full of energy.

They are smooth when properly trained. Really great to ride for long distances!

I love the amount of "heart" they have, at least the ones I've known (including my own). They'll put so much effort into doing what's asked of them.

My little black horse is not a dead-head that just pokes along on the trail; he's very aware of his surroundings, sure-footed and responsive. He can pick his way through the "goat trail" areas and then move out comfortably when the footing allows it.

He likes just "hanging out" with people, but without being "in your face" or pushy or mugging people for treats.

One of mine is like this and I love it. He just comes up, stands next to you and hangs out. My other one wont come hang out, he's off doing his own thing and could care less if you are there or not (unless you pull out a treat).

I have ridden all kinds of breeds and diciplines over the years and always appreciated the smoothness of gaited horses.

What I like the most about my boy is that he is a mellow gaiter and isn't a "constant on, high energy" horse. Nothing wrong that type of gaited horse and many people like the "go" that they usually have, but it just was not what I was looking for. He will turn it on if asked, but really prefers to take it all in like me, however he is smart, sure footed, and very aware of what is happening around him.

Like many other gaited horses he just wants to be around people but doesn't have to be completely inside my pocket. He is content to hang out and "help me" with fixing fence or just be his goobery self.

Smooth is nice, but it's the heart that matters in the end. I've never encountered a group of equines that are so constantly full of heart. Some horses work against you, some horses work with you, but gaiteds work for you. Their mission in life is to please their masters. If you needed a horse to ride to the moon, a gaited would either get you there or die trying.
