39 requirements for Young People

Country Life (A UK magazine primarily bought by the fairly well off, country set) have published a list of 39 things all young people should be know how to do:

1. Cook three different dinner party menus (not unless people like food poisoning)

2. Say 'Can you help me please' in Arabic, Cantonese, Urdu, Spanish and Russian

3. Play a musical instrument, even if it's the tom-toms or a mouth organ (flute, piano and the very basics of the Harp)

4. Ride a horse to jackaroo standard
(of course)

5. Be a 'tech whisperer', able to fix and set up the latest techno-gadgets.

6. Talk about five classics of English literature with authority and passion

7. Perform resuscitation on someone who has stopped breathing

8. Know how to grow carrots from seed, distinguish five native trees, identify twenty flowers and arrange a bunch (no chance I have a black thumb, things die around me)

9. Handle a shotgun, skin a rabbit, gut a fish and pluck a pigeon (since I was 11)

10. Repair a bicycle puncture and fix the chain

11. Dance the eightsome reel, waltz to Strauss and bop to Lady Gaga
(Learnt to Reel in uni, Waltz in high school and I think everybody can bop)

12. Taste the difference between a Sauvignon Blanc and a Chardonnay and know how to mix a mojito or margarita (wouldnt be half belgian if I couldnt)

13. Write a memorable thank-you letter

14. Recognise Mozart, Elgar and Handel

15. Put up a shelf and change a plug
(And make a gate, do the fencing, make a land yacht)

1. Cook three different dinner party menus ~ Could probably make it happen without burning the house down.

2. Say 'Can you help me please' in Arabic, Cantonese, Urdu, Spanish and Russian ~ Spanish maybe, but it seems to me that asking if someone speaks English would be an equally if not more useful emergency question.

3. Play a musical instrument, even if it's the tom-toms or a mouth organ ~ Piano, trumpet, and a little guitar

4. Ride a horse to jackaroo standard ~ Check!!

5. Be a 'tech whisperer', able to fix and set up the latest techno-gadgets. ~ I'm no tech wizard, but I'm pretty good at sorting out minor problems with most gadgets given a few minutes to mess with them

6. Talk about five classics of English literature with authority and passion ~ I don't come off as authoritative very well when I speak, but I could probably pull it off in a pinch

7. Perform resuscitation on someone who has stopped breathing ~ Something I really ought to learn

8. Know how to grow carrots from seed, distinguish five native trees, identify twenty flowers and arrange a bunch ~ I've never grown carrots, but could probably do it. Flowers and trees, no problemo.

9. Handle a shotgun, skin a rabbit, gut a fish and pluck a pigeon ~ Guns are no problem. I've gutted fish, and I've seen rabbit skinning and bird plucking demonstrated several times. Not pigeons, though - just chickens.

10. Repair a bicycle puncture and fix the chain ~ Never done it, but not something that would scare me

11. Dance the eightsome reel, waltz to Strauss and bop to Lady Gaga ~ I have two left feet, no desire to dance, and I still don't get Lady Gaga

12. Taste the difference between a Sauvignon Blanc and a Chardonnay and know how to mix a mojito or margarita ~ 6 months too young to taste differences in this country, but I've helped my mom mix margaritas for parties before

13. Write a memorable thank-you letter ~ I can write a thoughtful thank-you, whether they're especially memorable or not is debatable...

14. Recognise Mozart, Elgar and Handel ~ Mozart for sure, Handel maybe, probably not Elgar, though

15. Put up a shelf and change a plug ~ Yeppers!

16. Tie a bow tie, bowline and Bloody Butcher ~ Just the bowline...

17. Sail a boat across The Solent ~ Nope...

18. Carve a joint of meat ~ Nope again...

19. Tell the difference between Gothic, Baroque and Palladian architecture ~ Gothic and Baroque for sure, not Palladian so much...

20. Make a speech, entertain an audience with a joke or an anecdote, and sing at least two songs by heart ~ I've done speeches, jokes and anecdotes. I know a lot of songs by heart, but I'm an awful singer who has no desire to demonstrate her ineptitude.

21. Drive a tractor, reverse a trailer, renew engine oil and change a wheel ~ Done or assisted with all of them!

22. Find their way round five capital cities ~ Do county seats count? I've never been to a national capital, and only a couple of state capitals.

23. Host a party and put others at their ease ~ I've helped host family parties before, but never done it alone.

24. Sustain a 10-shot rally at tennis ~ Never played tennis in my life...

25. Build a bonfire and lay a fire ~ Been doing that since my early teens

26. Perform three good card tricks ~ I know one, and it's not very good...

27. Identify five constellations and find the North Star ~ North Star no problem, and I can spot Ursa Major, Ursa Minor, Leo, Taurus, Orion, and Cassiopeia, as well as several other major stars/"landmarks" (Sirius, Betelgeuse, Pleiades...)

28. Score a cricket match ~ I know even less about cricket than I do about tennis...

29. Talk knowledgeably about five British landmarks ~ Hmm... maybe 3?

30. Uncork and pour a bottle of Champagne ~ Nope...

31. Iron a shirt, sew on a button and sew up a hem ~ Mom taught me when I was 10 or so.

32. Amuse small children for at least an hour with magic tricks and story telling ~ No problem (Thank you 4-H kid-wrangling!!)

33. Read a map, pitch a tent and pack a rucksack ~ Easy peasy! Getting the tent folded back into the cute little package it came out of the next day is another matter...

34. Be authoritatively acquainted with at least one work by da Vinci, Constable, Degas, Turner and Canaletto ~ Only one or two of them...

35. Know how to manage a bank account ~ Been doing that for about 3 years now

36. Slip away from a football riot ~ Never had to, but I like to think that I could if the occasion called for it.

37. Address a member of the Royal Family ~ Um, no...

38. Complain effectively but politely in a restaurant ~ My life's philosophy is to not complain unless all other options have been exhausted. As such, I'm woefully uneducated in effectively polite complaining tactics.

39. Deliver a lamb ~ Nope...
