I just spent a month in Hell's Canyon volunteering.
An amazing amount of backpackers came through that month. Many backpackers where in their 70's, the oldest I knew about was 80. She spent 4 days hiking around. Impressive!!!!
I want to be very active when I get up in that age range. I want to be riding, backpacking, hiking around! I want to be a Grandma Gatewood.
Read about a 100 year old runner the others day. Now that is absolutely amazing!!
Wow, Grandma Gatewood hiked the Appalachian Trail in ONE season?!! Same here... gives me something to aspire to, too! I keep thinking maybe by then I will be healthier (ha, one can hope) and I can maybe, finally get back to riding.
I'll be 60 this year, so I don't have very long to wait, ha ha. I'll be happy if I can get a bike this summer and get out on some of the bike trails.
my dad started sea kayaking at 60. and quit at 85 due to a shoulder injury. I am inspired to watch this video but doubt I will ever be in this rarified club.
That's wonderful about your dad, tinyliny! I love kayaking, but sea kayaking, now that takes a lot of strength and talent... impressive!
Me too, while I really am inspired... I know my weaknesses due to my lumbar spine injuries and my heart issues (always had an arrhythmia, recently found out I have diastolic heart failure, so the shortness of breath always does me in whenever I exercise, altho I just keep plugging away anyway for as long as I can). I know I can never hike much at at all, but I can bike short distances... and once my torn mensicus/knee issues are healed (or dealt with somehow) I know I will be able to ride again, too (light riding). I love to read, and to hear, about people who took up these kinds of hobbies later in life.
A number of the people I talked to had health issues but they didn't let that stop them.
One gal in her 70's had a heart valve replacement, she was told to walk only 2 miles a day, no more. She walked 12 that day no issues and thinks nothing of it.
Another gal in her 60's had 3 knee replacements, she still skis, backpacks, fights fires and travels extensively.
One guy has some type of a tremor, he was in his 60's and his pack weighted 90 lbs due to all his photographic equipment and camping stuffs. He was SO incredibly in shape that going up this brutal quarter mile section of the trail he never stopped. Everybody else does ( well minus the long distance runner). He also skis.
I'm in my mid 60's and was happy that I can still mount a horse even though I need a 3 step mounting block, but once I'm up there, we can go for hours and many miles.....now I have someone to emulate to really get ambitious!
Thanks ChitChatChet, I agree.... ya have to keep going. Sometimes the health issues knock me on my butt for a few days or a week or so... but then I begin to feel better, and then... watch out world! Once I can get another bike, and start to bike again, that will help a lot.
GF is 61 and frankly, she's a beast! I don't know how she stays so motivated but I can't keep up with her.....
This past year I rode with a fellow who's 75....he rode 13 miles with us on a mule.....and another fellow who's 85 who went 9 miles with us.....
Personally, I don't know how long I can ride, but hope it's several more years....
