Alaska??

I know we have some folks here from Alaska .. and probably some that have visited Alaska .....

Here's the deal. My dad, 78, with muscular dystrophy .... the one thing he always wanted to do and didn't is visit Alaska and go fly fishing. Alaska is on DH and my short list for vacations anyway, soooo....

We're considering booking a vaca for DH, myself, and both our dads (FIL is an amputee).

Help? I'm thinking Anchorage is a no brainer ... any ideas?
We just want to make this a memorable time for our dads .... fishing, mountains, ocean, crab, halibut .... you know. Keeping in mind that they are both somewhat handicapped ...

Suggestions?

Maybe take a cruise? You can sign up for different activities at each port of call.

Denali National Park and Preserve! Juneau, the islands...there are lots of great, beautiful places. I'd get a Lonely Planet book on Alaska for a good rundown on different places.

Why do you want to visit Anchorage?

I have not been to Alaska myself but my parents did the cruise and were left unsatisfied so they flew out for a couple weeks. My sister in law spent a few weeks there too. I suggest no cruise and fly out.....

I'll try to remember to ask my parents where to go. They've actually been planning to drive there....

A city is a city is a city. You've seen one, you've seem 'em all, generally (I might be biased, being a native Alaskan, but if you like cities, go for it!). I'd stick to the smaller fishing villages. Personally I love the coast, but the interior is great too. Please do get some books and atlases though...If you're doing a road trip, there are some places you might stumble upon where you would most certainly not be welcome (Northway being one of them). So, it's best to read up first. And really, you can't go wrong with Denali.

Keep in mind, Alaska is huge!

Thanks. I think we're thinking city conveniences might be more comfortable for our dads, but then be close enough for day trips here and there.

Will definitely read up .. I'm kinda obsessive that way!

Fly and drive would be my suggestion from what I've been told. I can ask my parents where they would suggest you go. They took a month long motorcycle trip and drove up through Canada and tooled around AK for awhile. Made it to the Arctic circle on a couple of Harleys!

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ... don't tell my hubby that! We'd be dumping the take-the-dads-to-alaska idea and be loading up the bikes! Lol.

I don't want the cruise, so that's out. We will definitely fly and drive .. just figuring out the where and what at this point is mind boggling...

I would love to see my dad cast one more fly rod and catch a fish in Alaska...

My grandpa, uncle, and aunt all came up from TX to do the same, so it's definitely doable! LOL
