I also don't hunt and never will, but I think it's definitely neccessary. Like another poster said, deer populations are sky high and that means there is not enough food for them all. They could starve to death or be hit by a car and the meat wasted. Or, people can thin the numbers, which helps keep the other couple hundred thousand in each state healthier, and fill their freezers with nutritious meat.

I see where are you coming from. If you keep quiet, I can tell you a secret and admit that I've a very soft heart and killing feels a bit cruel in my heart too. It can still be a dear hobby to someone like horses are to you and like stated above, it's also needful.

I'd suggest you to talk with these hunters. Let them know how you feel. Even it wouldn't stop them, they can perhaps avoid to talk about their hunting things when you're around and I bet it makes also you to feel a bit better. Perhaps they can give you a view of a hunter and explain some things. If it's possible, visit your friend or something when they do their stuff so you needn't to see all that.

About the tricks you suggested, I'd advise you to give them up. Like I said I see your view too but would you like if someone for example hided your horse's girth or knocked its shoes off? Hunting can really be a dear hobby to someone. Some of these tricks (like filling a gun with confetti) sound also dangerous and you said and I'm sure you don't want to harm anyone. I say that don't mess around with guns, there's enough power inside to turn the situation dangerous if you use a gun incorrectly.

ugh. You can't be serious? That's ridiculous. Hunting is a part of history just like riding. It's how humans survived. I"m an avid hunter, but I don't kill for sport. I kill for food. It's part of life, a necsecary factor. Overpopulation and disease would kill out the game if we didnt hunt them. And that's alot more painful for the animals. I would rather the game go to use than waste away. What's next? Fishing can only be catch and release? Seriously. All the hunters are going to be laughing when the day comes that you have to hunt to survive.

Honestly, like the aforementioned, it's really stupid to go about it this way. As long as they're actually eating the meat they bring home, there's no reason for them to be stopped. If they were just laying it to waste, however, that would be another story. I enjoy hunting, my dogs love being birddogs, and it would be horrid to take someone's hobby away from them. If you're worried about the safety of animals, voulenteer at an animal shelter or the like to help protect those that really need protected, not the ones that rely on us in the food chain to hunt them so they don't grow overpopulated.
