I think it's very good. Have always admired folks that can make something they see in their mind come out through their hands.

Of course he will like it - carvings like that are "man things", and unless he stars in The Big Bang Theory", he will love it.

My dad was a wood carver - they are great family heirlooms that are special because they are made by hand and are personal. My favorite memento from my dad is a "plain" Winchester 30-30 with large carvings in the stock - a running deer on one side and dogwood flowers on the other side. Walnut is tough to carve, but you might try it some time...
