Change of career path

I'm currently going to college for Equine Health after years of having my passion for horses, but i've somewhat had a change. My brother committed suicide recently after years of dealing with addiction and depression. It has really hit home for me that i'm honestly thinking of going to college for Substance abuse counseling. I have one year left of my current degree so i'm going to go ahead and finish it. And in a year if i'm still strongly thinking about doing substance abuse counseling then I may attend a college at home and get a degree in that.

Has anyone else change their careers? Or is anyone on the forum a substance abuse counselor?

Very sorry to hear about your brother. My sympathies to all who loved and will miss him.

I've changed careers a few times. The last was when I was 42.

I have friends who went to college for substance abuse counseling. Only one is still in it. I understand, from them and some that work in my current town, that it can be a very frustrating profession. Kudos to those who can do it without burning out.

My only caveat would be that it is a very narrow degree. Not marketable to diverse positions. But, you would be in a better position having the Equine Health degree also.
