Considering A Tattoo - Thoughts?

It's coming close to my eighteenth birthday, and I've been considering getting a tattoo. I didn't want to get a big one, or something pointless. I want it to be small, and I want to be able to see it. So I thought about getting Nelly's five digit brand vertically at the base of my thumb on my palm. I want to be able to love the idea before for at least a year before I get it. Any thoughts?

Didn't read the whole thread so someone may have already said this. Take a lot of consideration for where you place your tattoo. A lot of companies do not allow their employees to have visible tattoos. You don't want to be wearing long sleeves in 98 degree weather because you have a tattoo on your forearm. I work retail management and am not allowed to have visible tattoos. So I have my tattoo on my lower abdomen, right next to my right hipbone. Also, consider that people will stop you and ask you about your tattoo, if it is visible. If you don't want people asking about it, be sure to place it in a non visible area. Other than those considerations, and obviously choosing something meaningful, I say go for it! :)

I did a similar tattoo- my horse has a circle star brand on his left shoulder so I put one on my left foot. I figured that was one of the best places as you can look down and be reminded of it all the time but don't have to worry about going to extra measures for covering it up if you have a job where tattoos are unacceptable.

It's a very meaningful and creative idea though, I'd say just give it lots of thought, go into a bunch of tattoo studios to get opinions from a variety of artists on what they think the best (and worst) placement would be. And, depending on where you choose to get it, bring a stress ball to squeeze during the tattooing ;)

LOVE my tattoos. Best advice is go small with your first one and do not get one on your foot it kills! of course i did both of those things i got a horseshoe about the size of the palm of my hand on the side of my foot man it killed! then i got a huge barbwire cross with my horses head in the middle of it with just the color of her eye as color on my entire calf. My next one is horse hooves going up the left side of my spine and dog prints going up the right and when either of my girls die im gunna have their full name birth date and death date put next to their print. The general hand area is not a good area due to your skin is constantly touching things (even the back of the hand) and the skin on your hand actually flakes off more times during the day than the rest of your body. So in about a few months to a year your tat would be nonexistent. But whatever you decide post pics of it! id love to see it!

I am kind of torn about tattoos. Some of them are really quite gorgeous. But then, so is your skin, as it is. I would say, if you really want a tattoo, make is small and discrete, so that you can appreciate it, but it isn't screaming "look at me, now!" 24/7 for the rest of your life.

I kind of feel the same way about people who tattoo their skin like it's wall to wall carpeting as I do about people who dress like they think they are God's gift to women/men and have their body pressed up, down , out so that it gets maximum viewing attention. it can be selfish to want other people to LOOK at you so much. I dunno. that's probably an old fashioned idea, but it just strikes me as selfish.
