When people find out I've been to Dubai I get all sorts of questions about what it's like. They see all the shots of huge buildings, lights, yachts, opulence and want to know more about it. I've tried explaining that the Dubai I visited is nothing like what it is today but they really don't get it. Well today I found on the web a picture of Dubai in 1991 and a current one, pictures really are worth a thousand words. This is perfect because I was there in 1991 and 1993 so captures what I remember perfectly.

Yeah, the development there has been incredible. My son has been deployed several times and one of them was a 12 months stint in Qatar. He had to go on a few raids to Afghanistan and Iraq, but in between the raids life wasn't too shabby in Qatar...

My sis & bro in law lived there for 3 years, he worked for an oil company. She liked it the first year, then each year her like subsided. She sent me great pics of the camel races every week, lol.

I have acquaintances who have been there for either polo or TB racing.

I still wouldn't go. Like/need the freedoms we have here. But find it interesting.

I spent roughly 30 days there between two deployments in 3-5 day stints. First couple trips were exciting but it quickly became boring.

I have a friend who moved there to work for the Cleveland clinic.

I've never been in the city but I've passed few the airport a few times and even that is crazy...

I have family that lived there about the time frame you visited, though I think my cousin stayed there until about 1996. I've never thought to ask her about her time there, but she did bring us souvenir beach towels that say Dubai once when my brother and I were children :P

Dubai is trying to set itself up for having an economy post oil days. They know it is a finite source of income and are looking beyond today to ensure they have a tomorrow. I hope they are not doing too much too soon, though. Several of their developments, Palm island and map of the world, were evidently ill conceived and have some real problems. Kudos for them for trying to get ahead of the oiless future.

I have a cousin working at the embassy in Bahrain. She has some interesting stories about that. My sisters and I are going to Indonesia for a month starting in Sept. They are going there through Dubai, but I am going the western route. I would have liked to have seen Dubai. Oh, well.....
