Wow! Great responses! Thank you All very much!

My mom is very non-tech, doesn't even have email or go to the Internet (the only exception is Skype to talk to friends/relatives abroad), so whether it has other apps or not is not very important. However a good screen/contrast is really crucial as all of us have rather bad eyes. I have android tablet, and screen is somewhat hard to read for long time.

I will stop by Best Buy to see if they can demonstrate some (didn't even think about it since I usually buy off Amazon). But sounds like Kindle Touch or Nook (haven't even heard about this one) will be my pick.

Thanks again!

The Nook is from Barnes and Noble. I personally like it better than the kindle. We have two nook first editions, nook simple touch and a nook tablet. Hubby uses the nook tablet, the one of the first editions is put away for now. My oldest son reads the other first edition and I have the simple touch.

The text on the nook is able to be adjusted bigger and smaller as well as how wide the text goes on the page, and how much space between the lines.

I find that sometimes the people at the Best Buy really don't have a clue and you need to do some independent research as well. BUT it will at least give you a chance to handle them. If you have a Barnes and Noble near you, go in there and talk to them about the Nook if you want more info.

I don't know about Kindle, but we have extra warranties on our nooks that go above and beyond what is "standard" and covers drops and spills as well. So if you drop it and crack the screen, they will replace it.

This is the nook simple touch - BARNES & NOBLE | NOOK Simple Touch

And this is the nook simple touch with backlight (haven't actually seen one of these in person, but I get the feeling you would get the same eye strain with it being backlit, but not 100% on that) - BARNES & NOBLE | NOOK Simple Touch

I think if all they want to do is read books either the Nook or Kindle would work, Val.

I have the Kindle app on my Android X2, but one of these days I'm going to get an actual Kindle. I don't have any trouble reading the screen, but I'd like it bigger.

I really like that Amazon.com has literally hundreds of books for free download for Kindle. I haven't seen anything like that for the Nook, but to be honest, I haven't looked.

The books are there SR.

BARNES & NOBLE | free nook books As of right now it looks like there is over 1 million (almost 2 million) free nook books.

Cool, ND. I figured they'd have something similar, otherwise Kindle would have overtaken the market by now.

Lol yep. And their selection is constantly being added to, and on Fridays, they have a special "book of the week" type deal where you can get a free book that you would normally have to pay for.

I'm glad I found this thread, as I'm also looking at getting an e-reader soon. This might seem like a silly question, but does anybody know if there are any available that still use the e-ink (no backlight) but have colour? I like to read comic books and graphic novels and the art really loses something when it's in black and white.

I've tried googling it and haven't really come up with anything. (Everybody just recommends the iPad - I don't want an iPad or fancy tablet, I just want a reader. My eyes really don't like the back light) If it's a choice between backlit and no colour, I'd definitely go for no colour, but I was just curious if anybody knew if I can have my cake and eat it too!

Sadly from what I know, you have to have one or other, not both.

Speed that's a tablet though, just like the nook color and doesn't have the eInk.
