Gave away a dog but they broke verbal contract... Help?

So I gave away a dog as the dog was way to much for me physically and it was just not a good match. So I found a lovely family and gave him and all his stuff to them for free and I told them if it didn't work out that I would take him back.... Well few days later I found out they sold him!!!

Is there any recourse I can have or anything? I gave him to them as they promised an awesome home, did vet reference checks, personal reference checks, checked out their home and other animals, and got verification that they worked the places they did as well as make sure they owned their home...

I just want him back, the agreement was never for him to be sold...

That is very different than I am loaning him to you but if it does not work out you must return him to me.

You offered them an option that if it did not work out they could give him back to you.

It sounds like either he was not a good fit for their home or things did not work out for them.

When you give something away it is no longer yours to have control over.

Why do you want him back, anyway? Did he suddenly not become way too much dog for you?

Nothing more to say... AB already said it. Even written contracts do not stop the sale as you gave up rights when you sell or in this case give it away... no longer yours but the owners to do with what they want.

Darn... oh well what done is done. I can only hope that he's in a good home now..
