Help Finding Old Book

Many years ago I was given a book that was really old. I am no longer in possession of the book and I was hoping that some people out there would be able to help me figure out the title. I don't remember the author or when it was written.

Here's what I do know:
1) The book was a children's book but it was for older children. There were few pictures in it and the pictures were colored. The book itself probably wasn't more than 100 pages.

2) There were various stories in the book but they all centered around the main characters.

3) What I remember from the plot is that there was an older woman who lived by herself on a farm on a hill with many different pets and animals. The animals could talk. The woman had a small dog (I think that it was a black Pekingese) and then she adopted another Pekingese. When she did this the black Pekingese would sing a song that I think contained the lyrics "Sing dog, ming dog" or it could have been "Sing dog, song dog." This black Pekingese was very possessive.

4) I assume that it was written between the 1960s and 1980s.

So if anyone has any idea what book this was or a way to help me figure this out, I would greatly appreciate the help.

I did try Googling it but I wasn't able to find anything that was of major help for my search.

I don't remember if each story was connected to a month but I do know that the cover was different than the one that you are describing.

The cover had the woman surrounding by her animals while they were outside.

@tinyliny, I caught the tail end of a Ma and Pa Kettle movie on not too long ago. Made me remember sitting and watching the show on Saturday mornings when I was a kid. LOL Ma Kettle and my maternal grandmother were clones in looks and personality.

@Wallaby

That isn't the book either but that book sure does look like a fun read. I might have to read that one.

I've got an idea, maybe while we try to figure this out we can talk about our favorite books and why we like them.

In general, can be any age group.

One of my favorites is Pride and Prejudice. It's a different romantic story than what I normally find in books. Elizabeth was not really looking for a husband and throughout the entire book I didn't feel as though she ever became infatuated with Mr. Darcy. It wasn't until the very end of the book that she had acknowledged her feelings for Mr. Darcy, which even surprised her father. In my opinion, Jane Austen did a very good job of allowing Elizabeth to keep her true feelings for Mr. Darcy hidden. Especially since she had told him that she was not going to marry him when he clearly had feelings for her. To me it's one of the more realistic romance novels. The Bennet family had a very interesting family dynamic and Jane Austen didn't just skim over Elizabeth's sister's stories either.
