Horse Books for Adults?

Besides Dick Francis, are there any other books and especially book series on the market about horses or at least focused around horses? Fantasy, mystery, romance? Anything?

I searched Amazon under the Books category doing "Horse Series" and got a ton of YA books and a few weird looking adult books but nothing that caught my interest.

On another note, I love writing and while not published at all except for a poem in the newspaper in high school...what would one want to see in a series that focused around horses? What would you as horse lovers need to have in the book series to keep you coming back for more? I have a little time on my hands and wouldn't mind starting something...the question is if I'd ever finish it...

Oh, and I'm curious...what breed of horse would you prefer to be included? QH/APA, Appaloosa/TB's/Warmbloods, etc?

Oh there are a bunch!

Jonathan Francone
Kit Ehrling
Rita Mae Brown

And a bunch more that escape me.

Search horse mysteries, horse fiction, adult horse fiction and you will find a fair amount. :)

My entire state library system has nothing at all by the first two and only books about dogs and cats from the last one. At the moment, books must come from libraries or as gifts as we save up and pay off my car...

I'm looking for something where horses are at the center of the plot but fiction.

My library was pretty light on horse fiction as well. :( The kindle is a wonderful thing but for years I couldn't find much. I'll have a think and come back to this with a bigger list for you to search. I know a few more who might be more popular but I cannot remember them for the moment. My coffee has not yet kicked in. :)

Ok...try these:
  • Jane Smiley
  • Carolyn Banks
  • Tami Hoag - she writes non-horse-related mysteries so I'd be surprised if your library didn't have her book Dark Horse which is horse related.
  • Ben Osborne
  • J. Carson Black
  • MaryAnn Meyers
  • m. Garzon
  • Toni Leland
  • Jilly Cooper
  • Bev Pettersen

Hopefully you'll find something.

Man. My state library system sucks! Was able to get a few written in the 90's by Carolyn Banks. That's about it. I have a Kindle too but trying not to spend unnecessary money currently.

I have a feeling that for what I'm looking for...I'm going to have to write it.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Have you tried the Sara Gruen books? Riding Lessons and the sequal, Flying Changes? Great books about a former Olympian who got back into horses after a career-ending injury.

No worries Wyndella.

And btw...I work for Mars so am quite familiar with Dove chocolate. Yum! LOL

I have read and loved Sara Gruen! Thanks for the suggestion!

And that is awesome that you work for Mars....I adore my Dove. Other chocolate just isn't the same...although a Snickers bar hits the spot at times!
