Delfina, don't feel bad! A while back I walked out the door in my white nightgown, muck boots, messy hair, and a shovel! As I rounded the corner an old friend of the former owner was stopping by to say hi. I almost threw the shovel at him!
I was soooo mortified!

Rattlesnakes once cost me thousands of dollars.
was relocating to Witchita Falls and only took 3 horses. I boarded them a first for me. JAN and FEB no problem late march we started seeing little rattlers dead around the stalls . I was told the small ones leave the den early and start venturing out but not very far.
Since there was a den close by and the big ones had not started leaving yet I grabeed all 3 horses and moved them to a friends property on the other side of town. I paid 6 months board and then bought my own property.
I hat snakes and they are the only thing I fear worse than Romney as President. LOL
I kill any and all snakes that cross my path and have gotten 10 so far this year. I always picture myself acting like the woman in the cartoons when she sees a mouse when ever I see one. LOL Shalom

I haven't had many rattlers to deal with and the last one I killed with a hoe.

That said, a .22 revolver and some snake shot is what I suggest instead of a pellet or BB bug.

This is pretty short range stuff and what I use for rats at the barn.

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

You shouldn't kill ALL snakes!

Bull snakes will kill Rattlers and they are harmless. I have a 5ft Bull Snake that lives under my porch and her offspring (which aren't very small) around the outside of my house. I don't like her, particularly when she feels the need to spread all 5ft of herself on my doormat but she eats mice, kills rattlers and therefore gets to enjoy a cushy life.

I, too, am still laughing Delfina. It reminds me of the time I was "between cloth changes", I had on brand new pink fluffy slippers, a camisole, and ragged to short jean shorts. What did I care, who would see me? Well, fighto took off after a cyote ... so I am running along yelling when a UPS truck appears in the road...it is a rough road so he was going slow. DAM! I couldn't even hide behind a tree...there aren't any. So, I left the road and got my new slippers all icky. My dog returned not long after, tongue dragging...so, all for not.

Yeah, I like good snakes...they keep the mice and pack rat populations in check. We have one that pops in the yard on occasion (might be several different ones), I call him "herman"...he is trully an amazing snake! He is huge, looks like a rattler but is non-venomous...and can make the "rattle sound" through his mouth. I mean it is like memorex!! I am always careful to look for rattles before I shoot....I don't want to accidently kill Herman.

My absolute favorite gun, Fly, is a .223...you could hit a rattlesnake at 100 ft, no problem (if you could see his head at that distance). :) But for snakes, pellet guns are the greatest - they are pretty darn accurate at good distance and almost silent..and ricochet is not much of a concern.

There is just as much horse sense as ever, but the horses have most of it.

Well, you have the courage to get close enough to use a hoe....some of us are just not that brave. :)

I don't like snake shot much - you have to get too close. I guess if you can get close enough to use a hoe, you won't mind snake shot. But my imagination will run wild w the old "what if they decide to come for me?" stuff. Which, some will. You have to hit them square in the head w a pellet or bb, otherwise it is cruel and they just get injured and mad...but a head shot will knock them dead. I target practice w a pellet rifle a bit...but I have zero courage. So, no hoe, snake shot or shovel for me!

There is just as much horse sense as ever, but the horses have most of it.

I've only seen 4 or so snakes this year. 3 of them were black snakes, so I left them alone. But like 3 weeks ago, we were burning our huge brush-pile in the yard and my mom saw a cottonmouth. She yelled for my dad, who got the .22 and shot it. Then Mom made me get my phone and take a picture. :)

I am not going to take the time to tell if it is a venomous snake or not.
I will beat it , shoot it , or club it to death if it slithers on the ground and has no legs.
Snakes give me the creeps and are my one true phobia.
I understand that they have a place in the ecosystem. As far a s I am concerned that is O as long as it is an invisible place. Shalom

Flygap picture the lady in the cartoons when she sees a mouse in Tom and jerry. That's me without the highheels. I have no pride in this matter. Shalom
