I need help with a moral decision.

Today, after coming home from the barn, there was a letter waiting for me. It was a heartfelt letter from my uncle that talked about how much my aunt loved me and wants me to be happy and do what I love. My aunt was an amazing woman who always put others before herself. I loved her, and it broke my heart into little pieces when she passed away from ovarian cancer four months ago. Her will said that she was going to give a large chunk of her money to all of her nieces and nephews to pursue whatever they wanted. The envelope I received contained a check for $2500...

I really don't know what to do with this money. The note said to do anything with it, and the first thing that comes to mind is a tack trunk and cover. I've been wanting this for a while, but $800 is just too much to spend for the pair. Now that I have this money I kind of want to spend it on the trunk. For some reason I feel like its wrong. Should I put it to something more meaningful? I just feel guilty that it would be spent on something I was planning to save up for...I really need help.

Any response is appreciated. Thanks.

In all honesty, it's your money. Do what you want with it. Isn't that what your aunt would have wanted? For you to spend it on what made you happy?

If a tack trunk is what you really want, get a tack trunk.

You will still have lots left to put away and save up for something more meaningful.

I think that being as you loved your aunt dearly, and you love riding so much that part of that money should go to something to do with your love of riding. Buy the tack trunk and cover that you have been wanting, or a nicer one. It will always be a little reminder of the love that you had for your aunt and she had for you. It will be something that you see daily, and it will remind you of the wonderful woman that gave it to you, thus reminding you of her.

Tymer, the money was given freely so you could spend it freely. There shouldn't be any guilt associated with spending it on what you want.

Why does the money have to spent on something 'meaningful'? Your aunt didn't expect you to build her a shrine with the money, she wanted you to have it so you could spend it.

Money is like manure; it does nobody any good unless it's spread around.

That's true. Its not so much that I want to use the money for something super symbolic or anything, it just felt weird using it on this kind of frivolous thing I don't really NEED in any way... But you know what? Even if I use this money for a tack trunk, I'll still have plenty of money to spend on something much less selfish.

I know that was a pretty obvious answer, but I kind of needed that confirmation mentally. Thanks.

I agree with everyone else, but I'll go alittle farther and say....from what you said about your aunt, I think the trunk is something she would have given to you if she knew how much you wanted it! You can always get a little plaque engraved in memory of... and attach it to the trunk.

A tack trunk is a perfect momento of this aunt. You could even paint her name on the lid, or have one of our wood burning artists do a wood burning on the lid? Or on a plate that you attach to the lid?

Having something concrete to remind you of her is really nice, IMO.

I can just agree with everyone else. Don't put fault on you if you buy something that you want even it wouldn't be that "needful", I'm sure your aunt wanted you to buy something that makes you happy.
