    I'm So Mad *rant*

So two weeks ago a group of shoplifters came into my store and stole about $1,300 of merchandise. They did it in less then five minutes and caught us totally by surprise. They also did it right in front of one of my customer's elderly mother. Tonight, I'm 99.9% sure they were back in the mall. I recognized the guy in their group. They saw me and my associate watching them. The guy shouted out to us to get our attention. He made sure we were watching as he and his group went into Bath and Body Works. They started stuffing merchandise in their bags and as soon as I pulled my phone out to call security, they walked out of the store. As they were heading out of the mall, they flipped us off. By the time security came, they were already gone. I'm so mad and there is absolutely nothing I can do. We already filed a police report when they stole from my store two weeks ago. I just want them to get caught and I really hope karma catches up with them asap! Grrrrrrrrrr!

I work retail and can't stand shoplifters either. And we also get people ALL THE TIME who think that we won't know any different when they switch price tags! We're not stupid, we know the proper prices of items in the store. Frustrates the heck outta me!

It's all on camera, but camera footage isn't really enough to identify them. They need to be caught in the act for the police to really do any thing. Tag switchers are idiots. Next time you get one in your store, just embarrass them. I always loudly point out the observation that the tags on their items are incorrect and must have been switched by someone accidentally. As long as you don't specifically blame them, they can't complain or say you accused them. By loudly announcing the fact that the tags have been switched, other customers in the store will hear you, embarrassing the tag switchers. Usually they are too embarrassed to ever come in again. If they are dumb enough to try a second time, just lodly point out how odd it is that the tags on their items are wrong a second time. You usually never see them again after a second time being publicly embarrassed.

I had an old couple, open up at a 6 pack of tissue because we had ran out of the regular single boxed tissues which were 69 cents. It wasn't scanning in the system, it took me a few seconds. Once I realized, I said that "I'm really sorry but these aren't for sale. Someone was probably trying to steal them and that's why they were opened"

See, the thing I love about my store is I can kick them out. It doesn't matter if they haven't stolen yet. We can still ask them to leave. Although that's something I'm very careful about. I'm pretty pro with the theft game now. With my current store I've been through 2 armed robberies, 2 break ins, junkies stealing whole shelving of medications, take and runs. I'm so pro with the cameras now, police reports, LP reports. I've dealt with so much of it the past year. Thankfully the past month it's been quiet. *knock on wood* the crappy thing about working in a drug store is you get the regular stuff stolen such as cosmetics, fragrances, over the counter meds. But then you also get the people who want needles or the oxy contin (sp?) or methadone. I'm prepared to get robbed again lol. We've had so many robberies in the area lately. It's a psychological waiting game.

But don't worry, you'll get them. Do you work by yourself? I really hope not. But maybe if you guys see them, page Fred Line 1 please. Meaning call security and maybe you can call the police. Try and double team.

We had one guy steal atleast 2k worth of stuff. The police FINALLY caught him, they wanted to let him go with a warning until they realized he 400 bucks of olay products on him.

But really, if they're stealing and pros. They don't care who they do it in front of, tis why you have to suspect everyone. The best thieves are the ones you don't suspect. They've got a system, they probably waited until you weren't watching.

I hate people who steal. Unfortunately I've been in retail long enough now that I don't care as much. It happens and when they're pros not much you can do. Safety is more important especially if they're coming in a group. Getting stressed and angry isn't going to make your day any better (I know, been there lol) But really, they will get caught eventually.

Oh man do I remember my retail days! I used to work at Tractor Supply back in college, and I once chased down a guy who just walked in, picked up a power washer, and walked out! I got his tag number and gave it to the police, but the police consider it a low priority.

Now I'm on the other side- I work in the Loss Prevention department for one of the big retailers with a national scope. Part of my job at this point is being the communications hub for a project that collects data on shoplifters when they get caught. Some profiles make me laugh, others just make me shake my head, and some of them just make me go "There but for the grace of God go I..."

One thing to remember is that most retailers carry insurance against losses from theft. My company's philosophy is that they'll never completely stop theft, they just try to make themselves an unattractive target. It's pretty cool walking into one of our stores and seeing security measures I worked on or got to review on the shelf!

It was a professional job two weeks ago. It was reviewed on camera and these people clearly knew what they were doing. It's just frustrating because in my 11 years of working retail, I've never had a group get away with such a large amount of product. They just did it so quickly that we barely had time to react and I'm always on my A game. I've been offered a few LP jobs. I'm just mad at my self because I'm supposed to be amazing at loss prevention. I brought this store down from a 4.17% shrink rating to a .89% rating over two years. I help do lp training at other stores. I took a write up for the incident where we lost $1,300. I have never been written up before and I know it's nothing personal, just company policy. It still drives me crazy. I'm also pretty sure the company partnered with the state's attorney and went after this guy sometime last year. All he really got was a slap on the wrist. It just frustrates me. I will say I am eternally grateful that I don't work at a pharmacy though. I give you mad props for that.

I find it really horrible that they make you take a writeup for an organized GROUP of thieves targeting the store! Seasoned LP professionals know that at that point all you can do is call for backup or the police. You never want to take the risk of someone getting hurt, especially when members of the public are present. And the ORC guys have NO compulsions about turning violent at the drop of a hat. That's a miserable company policy IMHO.

And dropping shrink to less than 1% in two years is AMAZING! There are stores of ours out there where we'd kill to have less than 5% shrink.

Just what?? You got a write up for that? That's bull****. Sorry but it really is, one of our people got written up because he's been with our company for as long as I have and he didn't even page someone to the isle to go check on this guy(some of our staff are to lazy to page). Who clearly was a junkie. But you will not get written up if you don't stop a theft. Safety is more important!!!
