iPhone or Samsung...I can't decide

I'm upgrading my phone very soon, and I'm having a hard time deciding between an iPhone 4S and a Samsung Galaxy S II. I know there are people here that have the iPhone...I swear, I think everyone has one at times...but does anyone have the Galaxy? I like the looks of both of these phones equally, they are going to cost the same, and one doesn't have anything about them that I like more than the other. So, can anyone offer something about either that they like from personal use?

I have the S II Skyrocket. I really, really like it. My only complaint is that it eats through data, but I think it's due to the larger display.

I don't have either of them so I won't be much help in deciding between the two. I'm "old fashioned", I have a Samsung flip phone but here's how I view it. Which one is going to be more suited for your purpose? Do you need a phone with application capabilities or do you just need one that is capable of the basic functions of calling, receiving, and sending messages? Don't pay more for something that you don't deem absolutely necessary.

Tempest - both those phones will have very similar features. Neither will be "basic" for calls.

I have a Samsung Galaxy of some description. I bought it because the features offered by it compared to iPhone weren't too different but it was far cheaper. I felt that the iPhone when compared to the Galaxy was over-priced for what you got.

Saying that, I wouldn't have wanted to pay the price of an iPhone because of how often phones, especially these new designs, break and how often they are upgraded and replaced.

If I was to choose between two equally priced phones, Galaxy and iPhone, I'd choose the iPhone purely for compatibility reasons (I have a Mac) but if I didn't have a Mac I'd go for the Samsung. I do think the Samsung's offer a better value for money.

That is one thing I don't like about the Galaxy, the big screen. It's not enough to deter me from getting it, but it's just big. I think to myself...do I want to hold that to my head and talk? Will it fit in my pocket without falling out?

As far as use, I'll use it. I have a Motorola Droid now that I use for everything. DH fusses about how I can't live without it, but it's helped me out many times having a phone with the capabilities it has. It's crapping out on me is the only reason I'm getting a new one. To be honest, if it weren't for the iPhone's price I would have probably just gotten the Samsung to begin with, but my cell company (CSpire) has an online special...a 64gb iPhone 4S for $150. It's like...wow...really??? I actually keep double checking it to make sure it's not some typo and it really is the price. Normally the iPhone is much, much more than I want to spend.

I will say this in favor of the iPhone...I like that you can update it to whatever current operating system is out. I like the idea of the Cloud and everything syncing up. I don't like that the screen breaks so easily and you have to spend (I'm told) $40 for some kind of screen protector. I worry if I get the Samsung it will be like my current droid and after so many years it just craps out, too. I know people with original iPhone's that still work and they love them. *sigh* I don't know. I'm thinking I'm talking myself into an iPhone. Why must there be so many choices! I like stuff simple, lol.

We got the iPhone 4. It was great at first but now there are issues. Seems like there are software issues. My phone lost speaker use. No sound playing videos or music unless you used the earphones. The wife's phone kept closing whatever app she was using and dropping calls. Both were replaced and she is having the same issues again even though she got the 4s as a replacement. We can't wait until our contract expires and get different phone. We'll probably get droids then.

I just crossover upgraded my daughters phone for my upgrade - her choice. It boiled down to the iphone or samsung galaxy, she chose the later. Hubby has the iphone. What I don't like about the iphone is - we would have to drive into another state to get it fixed if something goes wrong b/c only an apple store can do it. I assume you could mail it in...but, what a hassle.

There is just as much horse sense as ever, but the horses have most of it.
