Laughing at news reports...

Okay, so I was just reading this and had to laugh my butt off....
2nd winter storm in days blasts central US - Yahoo! News

The part that got me was this
Either they didn't get nearly as much snow as we did or their definition of "gusting winds" is quite a bit different than mine. We had about 20 inches of snow with winds gusting up to about 65mph. We've got drifts that are 6-8 feet deep in places. It's been above freezing and clear/calm all day long and they are still trying to get the roads cleared.

Haha that is ridiculous !

Do they normally get that kind of snowfall? If not, then yeah, it's a big deal to them.

I live in southern Virginia. Anything over 3 inches is a MAJOR event for us, because we're simply not equipped to deal with snow and ice.

Yup here that would be mind blowing haha. But seriously the people in my town wouldn't know what to do we get snow maybe once every 4 years and it isnt even close to a foot deep a couple inches maybe at most and people freak out and we grt a snow day lol. In reality it isn't a big deal but for us it only lasts a day maybe 2-3 at most but we usually have to drive up to the mountains to reach snow.

Depends where you are I guess. A neighboring town to my hometown got 3 foot drifts with 85mph winds and that was pretty intense for them...where the minimum for my friend in CO they have to dig through about 6ft of snow to get to their barn some years lol

If we get a dusting our news reporters get all breathless going on about how everything has come to a standstill. They really get the general populace stirred up over even the possibility of a flake falling.

Being a Buffalo Ny transplant to Northern Va-I laugh all winter. Shoot-I can remember ONE snow day my entire life in Buffalo-in Va all they have to do is PREDICT snow and everything closes and folks LOSE IT~! Funny to watch for sure-just stay off the roads! That snow might blow off the sidewalk into the road you know...so we have to go 10 mph and ride the brakes, just in case!

What's sad? They often see more snow than we do in the winter. Granted, we don't ever have to deal with the deep-deep stuff like some folks, but around here anything over a foot is a pretty significant snowfall. But even though I only see snow every couple of years and it's generally not more than a dusting...2 foot drifts are not such a big deal.

Here's what we were dealing with today. I took this picture just down the road from my barn while I was out on my "ATV"...since my car is still stuck in my garage and I'm not in the mood to shovel the drive. The top of this drift was even with my shoulder while I was sitting on Dobe. So, that would have made it about 7 feet deep. And, no, I'm not talking about the height where the graders stacked it up to. There isn't much stacked on top there and the drift behind is just as tall.

Here, too. We don't get big snow storms but once in awhile. Sometimes 5 or 6 inches will fall, and the whole city goes bonkers. However, it's very hilly here, and the snow is heavy and wet, so extrememly slick, and we have few snowplows, and most drivers have minimal experience in snow. So, needless to say, a storm like the one in the report would be apocolyptic here ( or at least the press would make it out to seem so)
