I smoke and I wouldn't allow anyone (and don't allow) anyone to throw any crap on the ground- butt or not, trash is trash.

Usually I give a friendly reminder if I see someone who smokes (a lot of people habitually throw butts on the ground, and have to consciously think about not doing it "hey, if you're going to smoke would you mind making sure sure your butts go in the trash?)). Second reminder is "less friendly" and come 3rd (if there is one) ... I'm not nice at all.

Spitting I don't really care about, so long as its outside off of common walk areas and such.

A lot of people have become very self-centered in recent years. If it doesn't affect them and there's no direct consequences for their actions, why should they care?

Perfect example is my boyfriend. He has one (bad) habit that absolutely drives me up the wall, that he sees nothing wrong with. He will spit out his gum and literally drop-kick it...even if we're within a few feet of a trash can. On numerous occasions, I've tried to reason with him, pointing out that he would be irate if he stepped in someone else's gum, so why does it make it okay for him to potentially make other people step in his gum. He always says "It doesn't affect me, so why should I care?"

His attitude opitimizes (I know that's spelled wrong, but I'm having a brain fart and spell check is failing) the way a lot of people think today. Unfortunately, it means that those of us that were raised to care have to deal with their rudeness.

I hate littering and had it been me I would have thrown it back in their truck.

I do admit it is a pet bug bear of mine and I have, when caught in a bad traffic jam, thrown all the rubbish one drive threw onto the road, back in his cat (that was a good one because there was a tomato sandwich that landed on his open shirt and slid down his chest.

I was expecting confrontation from him and was ready to call my GSD out the car but such a cheer went up from other cars I don't think he dared.

On clearing a field which had been used as a rubbish dump I found a load of litter dumped overnight. There were a load of envelopes with an address on it so, load went onto a tipper truck and delivered back to the owners. I did, before dumping it ask if they had any rubbish to remove and the lady said that her husband and son had cleared a load only yesterday. I tipped it on their lawn and before I could drive off the police arrived and were going to arrest me for littering!
I told them that had I kept the litter then I could be done for stealing by finding. Needless to say, as the family were 'posh' nothing other than a verbal warning was done about it.

Its so rude when a smoker flicks a butt in your yard period!

As a former smoker I would never do that- if I was at someones house I would make sure to ask where I could put my cigarette butt and ask if it was ok to flick it anywhere. Not everyone wants a yard fulla cigarettes!! I would have said somethin to the plumber-- somethin along the lines of.. "i know you're a plumber and I can deal with your crack but that butt is a little too much" lol.

I think its rude when people dip and spit at my feet-- seriously? I will stuf my expensive boots so far up their butt theyll be brushin my toes in the morning, lol.

I don't like when people spit on the driveway either- its disgusting and I don't want to step in it because I go barefooted and don't want your spit between my toes!

People with no manners really push my buttons!!

Police here in Oregon love to find dump sites with mail as they can fine up to $6,250.

The "opinions wanted" part of the title reeled me in, lol...
I would have been pissed off too. The spitting, not so much- it's gross, but the spit's going to dry up and nobody will know it was there. I mean, I'm not really a fan of people spitting in front of me, but it's just a minor annoyance and, in the end, I don't care. The cigarette butt? Disrespectful, rude, and dangerous. This is definitely my opinion, but smoking is a distasteful habit and I personally feel that if you're on somebody's private property, you need to ask to even light it up. Of course, he probably wasn't tossing it onto the ground in order to show how little he respects you, but I would definitely pull him aside and ask that he not smoke on the property and/ or dispose of his butts properly.

I don't think you have to "reem" him. Many places he goes probably don't care, and 15 years ago, it would have been a non-issue. Just plain asking him to not drp the butts there would be enough.

And by the way, OP, when I read the first post, I thought you meant the Plumber dropped his Butt (buttocks) on the driveway. You know, plopped it down, plumber's crack and all. That was not the most attractive mental image.

I don't allow smoking, or chew, anywhere on the property. If someone lights up or starts to dip, I let them know there's none of that here and ask them to go stand out on the street. I've never had anyone get testy with me, so it works. If he'd tossed the butt down in front of me, I'd have asked him to pick it up and I'd remind him about my no smoking policy.

I think spitting is one of the most disgusting, disrespectful things a person can do. It's nasty, can carry disease and stinks. It is SUCH a hot button for me! I react more strongly to that than just about anything else.

Thank you all for the input and the laughs He is not usually here at my home so I don't have to worry about it happening too often. Although next time I may ask nicely for someone to pick it up. I guess what struck me as being so rude was that I was standing right there.

And yes the spitting does go away but my horses are like my children and their stalls like their bedrooms. It totally ticked me off just as much when the other guy spit into my horses stall. I may be strange but the thought that my horse could have eaten that spit just turned my stomach.
