Living in Saskatchewan?

Wow.

So, Rich (the db) is working in Saskatchewan right now, outside of Regina.
He's enjoying the solitude of being in the country, and just posed the question to me - "why don't we think about buying a place out here?'
I said - "well only if it's an acreage in the country with room for a few horses and a dog for myself"
He replied, "Of course!"
So of course I had to ask "are you being serious?"
He replied, "Yes, of course I am."

I'm a little shocked.
Of course we need to talk more between us.

My train of thought so far:
- Keeping a few horses at home would be work, but it would be awesome and a fraction of the cost I'm paying to keep one.
- The cost of living in Saskatchewan is a fraction of what it is here
- We could buy a bit of a "fixer upper" because Rich is a really good carpenter
- There are ticks there. I do not do well with ticks.
- I would be able to fulfill my dream of having my own barn ish thingy.
- I would be moving away from some really awesome friends
- I would be moving away from my mountains.


I would really like to hear from Saskatchewanites... how do you like living there?

I don't know about Saskatchewan, but nothing beats having your own land
I have 40-50 acres ( small I know ) but having my horses at home is pure joy. Also having the space is really good. My other half does find it difficult being away from friends and family so there is a downside.
The horsey work side of things isn't as bad as you think - dosen't nearly take as much time as I thought and being my place I can do what I want, when I want, how I want.
As part of your research I would also find out about supplies in the area - is there a good supply of hay/straw/feed merchants . Also make sure there are good vets and farriers. I had to learn to do my own barefoot trimming as there is a real shortage of good farriers where I live.

I don't live in Sask either, but my Mother was born and raised in Saskatoon, and I've been there many times visiting family.

It is beautiful, I can tell you that much!

I think my mind is still boggled by the whole concept. Rich and I have been together for 2 1/2 years (not long for a lot of you, but long enough in my youth!) and this is as serious as I've ever been with someone, it's a little shocking!

I'm terribly excited at the prospect of buying a place with him, and having my horses at home...

Oh how exciting! I clearly do not live anywhere near there, and I have never even been to Canada, but I wanted to say - best of luck JDI! What an exciting opportunity. I hope that it goes wonderfully for you and Rich if you decide to do this. :]

One of my best friends lives there. She moved there from Calgary and she really enjoyed the slower paced life there. Houses are A LOT more affordable there and the life style is a lot quieter. She's always enjoyed it there BUT she is now making plans to move back to Alberta.

She said she has started to miss her family (she is married), and tho it is a lot more affordable to live there, it's a completely different lifestyle and she misses Calgary.

If he is down there and you are taking a bit of a break from work and school, why not go down there and try it for a bit? Give it a go, take a look at whats available for jobs and houses and go from there.

One big plus to living in Saskatchewan, if your dog runs away you can watch them run for days. Haha!

Really though, I have relatives in Sask, and the only issue they ever seemed to have (my uncle has his own farm, not sure how big) is that when it rains, it can flood easily. I have seen fields completely flooded. So I would think you should have something set up for that before moving horses in.
I'm actually considering moving to Sask myself, if not Alberta. Depends on a few things I suppose.

For work and school, I think we would like to look close to Regina - I haven't a clue where most of those areas are that your posted, they could be right outside or not, I have to look at a map.
