For the love of bacon!

I make my own bacon. Last time I made apx. 60lbs. That was around August or september. Well we eat it all :( and bought store bacon. Wow what a disappointment. Anyone else cure there own meats?

Yep! And I gotta say, once you have "homemade" bacon, you never want to go back to that store bought stuff!

Personally, I like my bacon chocolate covered...

You went through 60 pounds of bacon in less then 6 months? Holy goodness sakes! I have never had homemade bacon, but it sounds yummy!

Yeah we eat bacon a lot :) we make 2 to 3 lbs at a time. There's nothing like home cured meat. I built my cold smoker and never wanted to buy store bought again.

My husband wants to get into curing meat. His grandfather used to do it and he helped him, but he was so young that he doesn't remember the process. His father never got into that part of farm life and doesn't remember either. Maybe some day we'll be able to cure our own :) We try to use as much farm fresh stuff as we can. I'm a city girl that now lives in the country and I never knew that there was such a difference in store bought foods compared to home grown.

I really enjoy being able to cure our own meat, and the freshness and flavor is worth the work. The money is sure better too. I built my cold smoker for $0 and it works great. I also enjoy the fact of passing it on to our kids. Yesterday at rural king, they had rabbits for sale, my daughter looks in and announces that the white ones would make a good blanket but the brown ones would be better for gloves. She knows what live stock is for ;) and our boy can cut a days wood for the smoker in about an hour with a bow saw. I live for these times we can spend together.

Thats sounds soo yummy. I LoVe bacon. Never had it homemade just deer jerky and deer hamburger meat...made me sad to find out hamburger eef meat is so greasy.

I grow my own bacon....

2-3 pigs at a time in the backyard, I sell all but one which covers the cost of having mine butchered/smoked by a local place. They do an amazing job and it's YUMMY. I have 3 pigs heading off the end of next month.
