What uni are you at? If its anything like ANU there will be some pretty awesome accommodation arrangements, if you are an undergrad that is, postgrads??? We get shafted like you wouldn't believe (once the APGA scholarship is gone we aren't even recognized as students any more and are eligible for NOTHING), but here at ANU at least they guarantee every undergrad from interstate or international accommodation, they will even put you up in a hotel and pay the difference in rent for you if they don't have uni accommodation for you. Get every cent you can out of centrelink, I can tell you from experience paying taxes for years won't get you any help out of those scum, so you may as well get what you can out of them while you can because they will sure as hell wring every cent out of you they can once you start work. They will give a fair bit to undergrads, ausstudy, rental assistance etc. Go to your UNI, find the accommodation people and see what they can do for you, then go to student advisors, counselors, anyone, and get everything you can. Here its free, all that kind of assistance, the lot of it, I would be surprised if it isn't at your UNI too. There are resources available if you hunt for them.
Also look for scholarships. Don't not apply for them thinking you wont get them, forget that, apply for everything. You would be astonished at how many scholarships go begging for takers simply because most people don't know they exist, do web searches through the UNI website and you should be able to find them. Many of them might only be a few thousand, hardly anything when you have to house yourself for a few years, but they are there and available, and if you get a few of them it can tide you over. Hang in there, look for the services available and use them.

I'm glad to hear you found a home that you can feel comfortable in for now. This could turn out to be a great arrangement. (:

I don't mind older men but I do mind living with the leery uncomfortable ones!

My new places is alright. The girl is really nice but sort of young... I'm pretty sure I'm going to lose my bond here (through no fault of my own) :( It's good though, I have a nice bedroom and it's pet friendly and it's in a really good part of town. I am really lucky and grateful to have found this!

AnrewPL - I am a post-grad so there isn't so much accommodation with the uni. Even if they had some it would be pretty painful having to deal with freshers for a year! Money hasn't so much been the issue, more finding somewhere at all. Talking to people they say that even for full time workers it can be really hard to get a rental here. I'm definitely going to look for scholarships, this uni was a sort of last minute choice with a later offer so I missed the cut off dates for lots, but I noticed that there were a few women's ones as well that I might go for.

Thank you all for your support! Normally I try not to post things like that, but I was just having a real bad day and my family were being very unsupportive and I had nowhere to turn.

Now I just have to find somewhere to keep my horse and get him shipped down (literally, there is ocean involved)!

I hope this new place works out well for you! I've been forced to live in dangerous apartments before, and it's the worst of feelings.

So glad this is working! Maybe if the kid doesn't work out, you will be able to find another roomy with the support of your landlord. I am sending good thoughts your way!
