Just got my flu vax and this year they also gave me Prevnar for pneumonia. I have never had a reaction to vaccine before, but lemme tell ya! This year I am feelin' it. The Prevnar is the consistency of Karo Corn Syrup, yeah NOT fun and left a knot. The flu this year made my arm sore for the first time ever. So, both arms don't want to lift over my head and I'm achy and cranky all over! NOT liking this!

Whining is allowed.

I was 24 or 25 (1971-72) when I got my first ever flu vaccine. I got so sick I missed 4-1/2 days of work and crawled on my hands & knees to the bathroom for a few days. I haven't had a flu shot nor the flu since.

The sweetest 82 year young lady is on my schedule at the chiropractor. She gets periodic shots of Prolia and always reacts to them but this last time she ended up in the hospital, then in a nursing rehab center for a week.

Meaning my faith in doctors and the drug industry that compounds these drugs diminishes by the day. I thank my lucky stars I don't need anything more than blood pressure meds and I thank both sides of my family for that.

Dreamcatcher, I hope you're soon back up to speed:)

I hate shots so I pass on all the vaccines. I'm normally not a sickly person but I've already managed to get the flu this year. Only 2 days of feeling really bad so that's worth not getting stuck to me. LOL

Tiny, I have asthma too and a couple of other medical issues so I have been getting the flu shot and Pneumovax for years. Never had a reaction or lump or sore or anything. They wanted to give me the high dose flu shot this year, but were out of it (YAY), so I just got the normal one and this year is my first for the Prevnar 13. HOLY MOTHER! That thing hurt going in, enough that I commented pretty strongly, and the flu did too which surprised me.

The flu arm is better this morning, the Prevnar arm still has a pretty good knot and still doesn't want to go over my head, but seems looser. So, obviously, it's all too far from my heart to kill me, as my dear old daddy used to say.

Thanks for the well wishes everyone, whine over! Wine too, I don't drink, LOL!

Yeah, it's true what they say "getting old isn't for the weak" !!:-x

Have to admit, I was glad when they finally came out with the Shingles vaccine and was quick to get it. I've have family and friends with Shingles and that's one nasty thing to live through! One of my uncles was in so much pain he didn't leave the house for 2 months!

I have to get the flu shot as my husband has Pulmonary Fibrosis and everyone who works in the same area as him has to as well or they have to wear a face mask, but they all the got vaccine. I have been getting the flu vaccine for about 4 years now, I find if I ice my arm immediately after the shot and take some Tylenol I have no pain or swelling. If I don't, I get mildly feverish and the injection site swells and is tender for a few days. The year before I started getting vaccinated for the flu I got it, twice! Never again, never been sicker in my life.

I've never gotten a flu shot before :( I've just heard all the horror stories and get scared! I also just never make time to do things like that. I'm generally pretty healthy though...I brag I have a great immune system from growing up in a dog grooming shop and a barn and always eating after animals LOL! My husband on the other hand....gets sick if he gets within a mile of another sick person! Hes been "dying" for the last two weeks!

I'm another who doesn't get the flu or pneumovax. Last time I had a flu shot I came down with the worst case of flu ever. Doc tried to convince me to get the Shingles vaccine this year but I wimped out. I seem to get whatever they are trying to prevent, and since the Shingles vaccine is a weakened live culture, I don't want it anywhere near me!

My shoulder has hurt for about three months. Since we're whining, I am surprised it still feels this bad. I think I'm dealing with the idea that I am no longer a crash dummy. Getting hurt won't be over in a couple of days and a couple six packs of Le' Cowboy Coolaid.

I am getting to that age. I am too old to ignore important exams and my health, and too still **** young to care. I do evaluate everything I eat (aside from Le' Cowboy Coolaid) for nutritional value though. The good thing about Paleo is that it is pretty easy to stick to if you like grilling delicious meat and eating fresh veggies.

I get why many get the flu shot - especially if you're in an environment where getting sick could literally kill someone else, or when you're in regular contact with germs (schools, hospitals). However, I've never had it. My daughter used to have bad reactions to shots so we just avoid getting vaccines we don't absolutely need (don't worry, both my kids have all the mandatory vaccines, just nothing extra). She would get just as sick as if she had the flu, fever and all, from the vaccine. Seemed pointless. And none of us has had the flu for about 8 years now. Heck, I don't even get colds much. None so far this fall.

If you really want to boost your immune system and don't want to or don't have to get a flu shot, start drinking pine needle tea. Make it from white pine needles - google it to make sure you pick the right type of pine. I let my tea steep in a pot for a long time. We all drink it when school starts or when we've been around someone sick. I can't count how many times I felt that scratchy throat feeling, knowing I was starting a cold, made a big pot of pine needle tea, drank about 3 mugs and woke up the next day feeling fine. I do have a fairly robust immune system, it seems, but I swear, this pine needle tea is gold. And I don't usually believe this sort of thing, but First Nations people used to drink it all winter so they wouldn't get scurvy. Turns out white pine needles are ridiculously high in vitamin C and lots of other good stuff.

I've never gotten any of the flu vaccines either. I've never felt a need to, knock on wood.

@Dreamcatcher ArabiansI hope you're feeling better soon. It sucks when our bodies don't want to work the way we are used to.

@Acadianartist I have a tendency to reach for natural remedies first before I run to the doctor for anything. It seems to have been working for me so far. I will go see a doctor if something doesn't resolve in a reasonable time frame though.

I'm all better, it's been several days since I got my vaccs. Was just whining because I wasn't expecting to have them make my arms hurt. The Prevnar really took my by surprise because it hurt going in and they didn't say anything about it being one that hurts pretty good. So, I was just being a Whine Bag, I'm all over it now. Thanks for all the well wishes!

My father is 64, and last year the flu shot almost put him in the hospital. The doctors told him it was food poisoning at first, but eventually they came to the conclusion that it couldn't be anything but the vaccine that did it. He won't get another flu shot.

I have a severe phobia of hypodermic needles that stemmed from being very sick as a child and spending a lot of time in the hospital. I'm 18 now, and I bucked up and got the vax for hep a and b before I went on vacation last year.

It made me so sick I almost couldn't go on vacation. I was running a high fever and power puking until I was throwing up blood. I called the family doc and he "tut tut tut."ed and said "this happens more than you'd think."

My trust in doctors has always been little to none. It started when I was four years old. They could not figure out what was wrong with me. They scraped my urethra, did a scope of my bladder and put me through some pretty severe testing for months to have a different doctor tell them it was a simple bladder infection that was cured with that pink bubblegum medicine. It ruined doctors for me!
