    "Openly Gay Premier"

While watching Global News those are the words the news caster used this mornning. "Not only is she Ontario's first female Premier, she is the first openly gay Premier". I can't for the life of me see what her sexual preference has to do with her new path in life. She seems like a pretty sharp gal and McGuinty had Ontario on a path of self destruction. Do premiers and prime ministers really have any power or are they just the mouthpieces, the puppets, of their chosen political party.

Being gay does not make anyone either fit qualified or not to govern.
However until gays become more open and viewed by others as acceptable we will still have the media making a big deal from something that should not be.
If she governs with knowledge and wisdom she can help future politicians and the general public overlook ones sexuality.
I hope she is successful. Shalom

The media keeps the issues going on gays, race, religion, etc.

Why cannot they say: "We have a New Premier"

Who cares if she is gay, straight, buddhist, christian, white, black, yellow or green

I know, rhetorical question We will always have loudmouths....

The information can be used as a message of empowerment.
Millions of young african americans can look to Obama as an example of what they can achieve.
Yet the media seems to want to sensationalize this issue to sell papers, increase viewing and therefore ratings.
Hopefully though it matters to some for whatever reason the majority of the population doesnt really care. 10-20 years ago most would. Shalom

Or female. I remember when THAT was a big deal ..

It's no longer enough to be good at what you do .. someone has to lift you up to a cause ..

    Blech.

Honestly, as a member of the LGBTQ community myself, I am ALWAYS relieved to hear that those who are openly gay are holding positions of power.

It needs to be talked about. People need to know that we ARE making progress, even if it's baby steps. That's why it's a big deal.

People in key positions used to have to hide the fact that they were 'Gay', many of them married and had children to further conceal thier truth because it put them at risk of being blackmailed. They still struggle to get accepted no matter how much we try to pretend that we are now a tolerant society and a lot still hide in shame of what they are in this case the words 'in spite of being gay' do actually mean quite a lot. I guess maybe the more people do make a declaration like this that gets picked up by the media the more courage others can get from it

Jaydee I agree the more people that are 'out" the sooner being gay becomes a non issue. That's progress and leads toward acceptance. Shalom

It really doesn't matter about anyone's sexual preference as their ability to do a job, you are what you are. As for premiers & PM's having any real power? They do and if they go against party lines, they maybe or may not be voted out during a party convention. It has happened. Depends on their support within their party.
