Please Help New Zealand

As you may know, Christchurch was hit with a 6.3 earthquake recently which is following the 7.1 we had in September
The people of Christchurch are very short on supplies including drinking water and food. We have been instructed to collect rain water for drinking and temporary refugee shelters have been set up.

If you have anything spare at all to give please do. If not, please just send good thoughts and prayers.

We on this side of the world, well, we can donate to the International Red Cross or Doctors without Borders. Sending "things" is not practical.
I would assume that my government has offered assistance to NZ. They had better!
I saw the photos. It is absolutely shocking. Were those buildings that pancaked designed for earthquake safety? or did they predate that sort of thing? around here, ALL buildings built since about 1995 must be earthquake safe (of course, nothing is totally safe, but design makes a huge differenc.)
Hope that you are ok, and all your loved ones. So sorry for those not so lucky.

No, things arent really practical. Donations to the red cross if you have extra are greatly appreciated though or just keeping those that are still there in your thoughts.

The US has forces there and they and the NZ government are doing a great job.

I don't know for sure about the buildings. A lot like the cathedral are very old or were weakened by the September 4th magnitude 7.1 earthquake. However that quake was a bit further away and deeper. This was centered quite close and at a depth of only 5km.

I believe the CTV building and the others they are showing here were quite old buildings. I think the press building was from the 1970s or something (not sure?).

The hall of residence I am in is 'earthquake proof' and held up quite well.

Thank you :)
