I've had one for 5 yrs now and use it all the time. The best feature is being able to set a timer and it will shut itself off. It shut itself off alright. Wouldn't respond at all. Since I was a kid I always had to see how things work so I took the top off. Everything seemed ok, except as I touched various components they felt greasy. Some things it wouldn't matter but the copper windings were coated as was the underside of the top. A careful washing of coils and top and voila, it's up and running again. It was unable to sense the metal in the iron pan. First cleaning in 5 yrs. and it's working like a new unit again. :-o
Mine is a Salton, one of the cheaper models. Some get rather pricey. Price also depends on whether it includes a good stainless pan and glass lid. Amazon, Walmart, most big box stores or on-line. The power is a regular socket so the max output is 1500. So be mindful of power claims. I'd get an inexpensive one. It takes a little getting used to so stick with it. If it just doesn't work out you're not out a lot of money. Aluminum doesn't work on induction, but cast iron sure does.
