Do you know if they were able to give him TPA at the hospital when he got there? That drug is amazing and it begins reversal almost through clot break up and stopping the brain bleed. My father had a stroke a few months back. When I rushed into the ER (I work there) he was limp on a stretcher. He was looking around but seemed to have no cognition at all and his right side was completely paralyzed. It was the most horrible thing to witness when they are in that state. That said, they can do amazing things through therapy now. I didn't think my dad would ever walk again or talk as the first couple days were all gobble de gook speach. Now, his speach is back and he is walking, though needs some help. In my fathers case, he is 83 and was already very weak before the stroke. My prayer's for your grampaw to heal quickly.

I'm not sure. They are doing a scan to see if the can remove the artery, but they said since he sat there for an unknown amount of time the artery might be to thin and stretched. So Im not sure what the next step is.

Best of luck to your grandfather. I had a stroke a couple of weeks ago, but mine was much milder, from a different cause, and I am fully recovered. Hope all turns out well...

Another thing I thought of one if my old teachers had a stroke a few years back. What did he do? Take a couple months of and went back to work. He's STILL teaching, I honestly think he'll die teaching every year its "at the end of the year I'll retire" and he never does, he's been saying this since I was in grade seven, now I'm two years out of high school.

Good thought, Inga, but I believe (and just read an article) that tPa has the benefits of tPa are best the sooner it is used, and it has not been shown to help after about 4 hours (the OP's Grampaw was there an unknown amount of time, so they may have tried it...) but, also not to be used after that amount of time if the patient is over 80. That is not to say they may not have tried it, or that you may see it being used in your ER outside these parameters.

We still don't know anything about treatment. My dad said he gets mad because he tries to talk and no one can understand him. I'm trying to get my brother to ride up with me tommorow, but he's about as dependable as a broken down farm truck. My aunt and uncle made the drive from Missouri, so they will be there, and my grandmother came down from Indiana. Maybe it won't be as bad as I am expecting, and I feel better knowing family will be there as well.
