According to Old Friends' Facebook page, Charismatic, the 1999 horse of the year, passed away unexpectedly early this morning. From what I understand he was found in his stall, no signs of any struggling or suffering. He had only been at the farm since December, but was enjoying a retirement fitting the king he was.

Thanks for the news and the link. Glad he was home. They all hurt, but this one really hurts. There a lot of them in that age group I am so fond of and they are getting up there. What a horse. If you can find it the 30 for 30 about him and Chris was really good. Gary is interviewed and had said in the Preakness he thought he had it won and they came flying by easier than the Derby. That Chris shouted told ya as they went by.

He really was an incredible horse. I didn't follow him when he was racing, but when I saw the announcement of him coming to Old Friends I decided to watch some of his races. He was gorgeous, and the pictures of him posing during his welcome press-conference were priceless.

I'm not putting my entire bet on this yet, as the full repot is not out yet, but I wonder how he could have hurt himself so badly in his stall? How would the people at old friends' also not notice if his pelvis was that badly broken when finding him? If they did at least, there has been no mention of it.

I'll be waiting for the full report and an announcement from Old Friends. Regardless of what happened to him though, it does not make it any less terrible. What do you mean he got cast?

It's officially been confirmed by Old Friends that the early report is correct. A broken pelvis resulting in hemorrhaging killed him. According to the article on Blood Horse, "he was dead before he hit the ground". There were no signs of suffering, a tragic, but quick and painless death.

Heartbroken :icon_frown::icon_frown: I had been talking to Michael and been planning to go visit Charismatic and my old friend Tinner in a few weeks. I know Michael is devastated beyond words.

Slightly off topic, however the mention of what happens to "most horses in Japan" is grossly inaccurate. Japan's racing industry has come a looooong way since Ferdinand, and they are especially careful with all American imports. Charismatic had a wonderful life in Japan and never knew a day without love. He was incredibly popular over there and had a big fanbase.

Some of the way that got worked into common thought is on peta. They made a big deal and went and made videos they pushed everywhere. Grossly inaccurate is their tool of trade. I read when he arrived D. Wayne remarked he looked like he could run again. Silver Charm did too.

Yes! Boy is he one mean son of a gun. Has a double fence so no idiots get hurt near him. And trust me, there are some ridiculously senseless people that go on those tours.

And here's Genuine Reward, son of Genuine Risk.

Rapid Redux and Amazombie arguing over who gets carrots first (they both got carrots).

Beautiful sweet Game on Dude and Catlaunch.

Silver Charm

And my beloved Tinner <3 If you go, you have to ask when making your reservation to see him. He is VERY nervy and not on the normal tour. Sweet, sweet old horse though.
