Sad day - made the tough decision :(

Today I will be saying goodbye to my 16 yr old German Shorhair, Hannah Banana. I've had her since she was 3 months old & I was a sophomore in high school. She's been a great hunting partner - my first bird dog, a best friend who suffered through all of my teenage angst & has been my daughter's protector. Unfortunately it is time to let her go as her quality of life has decreased drastically the last few months. She's arthritic in both shoulders & a hip, lost her hearing, and has lost control of her bladder despite medication and all vet effort possible. I love you Hannah and will miss you so so much

We went for one last boat ride on the lake this morning and I'm fixing her a big ol' ribeye for lunch.

    Here's my girl

I'm so sorry MHF, that must have been an incredibly hard decision. She looks like a beautiful dog and what a perfect way to have a last day together.

Sending good thoughts to both of you!

I'm very sorry, MHF. I hope that this decision leaves you with a bit of peace knowing you didn't let her suffer.

Sounds like a wonderful last day for an old pal, I'll be she's happy.

I'm so sorry MHF, it's always hard to make the decision, even when we know it's the right one. I'll share my favorite poem for this difficult day, always makes me cry, but sometimes tears are needed and are the right thing.

    May I Go?

Do you think the time is right?
May I say goodbye to pain-filled days and endless lonely nights?
I've lived my life and done my best, an example tried to be.
So can I take that step beyond, and set my spirit free?
I didn't want to go at first, I fought with all my might.
But something seems to draw me now to a warm and living light.

I want to go, I really do; it's difficult to stay.
But I will try as best I can to live just one more day.
To give you time to care for me and share your love and fears.
I know you're sad and afraid, because I see your tears.
I'll not be far, I promise that, and hope you'll always know,
That my spirit will be close to you wherever you may go.
Thank you so for loving me. You know I love you too,
And that's why it's hard to say goodbye and end this life with you.

So hold me now just one more time and let me hear you say,
Because you care so much for me, you'll let me go today.

Thank you so much everyone. I've been working up the courage for this for awhile now and here I am just a few hours away. I haven't cried this much in years. She's been a part of my life for so long, I'm even going to miss her and my hubby's snoring dueling banjos *sigh* :(

GH, Thank you for sharing that poem. Made me cry but I know I am doing the right thing for her.
