State/region survey

So my story is going to involve a couple(10-15) different states, and I'm trying to decide which ones to do. I don't want to be stereotypical, but I don't have much else to go on.

1.What state?
2.Majority of people Western/English?
3.Most common breed?
4.Average boarding price?
5.Most common Discipline? Least seen?

Anything else you want to mention that you feel is specific to the area (Heat issues, illness, odd traditions) that you wouldn't mind me using.
And incase anyone wanted to know, I'm at 26,000 words. aiming for 60,000 before even thinking of publish (especially since its starting to look like it will become 2+ books if my muse lives)

1. Washington (Southwest region of the state)
2. Western
3. Quarter Horse
4. 250 self care, 350+ full care
5. Western pleasure, eq, and barrel racing. Don't see a lot of gaited horses around, uh....no fox hunters either.

It rains a lot and sunny days are a big deal. :)

State: Oregon (Portland)
Most people ride English.
I think the most common breed is a TB or part TB; rhere are quite a few QH as well
Boarding price: $400 or so for full care. A lot more if its a fancy show barn
Most common discipline is jumping or eventing. Not a l ot of western stuff where I am. If people do ride western its like trail riding or gaming and stuff. It seems like all the people who compete ride English.

I see a major flaw in this kind of survey and I want to use the above as an example of why. I live in Salem, OR about an hour south of Portland where the above responder is from. Prior to moving to Salem I lived in Beaverton which is just outside of Portland.

Stable care ranges from roughly 130 a month for partial care up to 600 for full in Salem. In the Beaverton I saw 170 for partial up to 800 for full.

In Salem the most common horse I see is the QH while when I lived up north it was a pretty good mix of everything.

In Salem I mostly see western with some English. In Beaverton it was a closer split but still more western than English.

In Salem I see rodeo, trail and some show people. In Beaverton it was mostly show with some trail riders, didn't see a single rodeo rider at all in 8 years up there.

That's quite a difference in what people see who live fairly close to each other.

1.What state? Central Kentucky
2.Majority of people Western/English? Both are well represented, but I will say there are a more English barns
3.Most common breed? First off Thoroughbreds(mostly race farms), then Saddlebreds, Rocky/KY Mountain Horses, Standardbreds, Quarter Horses, Miniatures, and pretty much everything else.
4.Average boarding price? $500+
5.Most common Discipline? Least seen? Everything is pretty well represented even just once a year in my area. Horse pulls can even be found regularly.

It is difficult to pinpoint things in Kentucky.

1. Oklahoma (Southeast rural)
2. Western, hardly ever see English
3. Quarter
4. If you own a horse, you own property, no stables here.
5. Rodeo or ranch

Most horses here are working horses. If someone says they have a roping horse they may not mean a rodeo horse but a ranch or working horse.

1.What state? Virginia (North west)
2.Majority of people Western/English? Hmm that's a tough one. In my area I'd say Western but more south there's a lot of English
3.Most common breed? Quarter Horse, Tennessee Walker, Thoroughbred
4.Average boarding price? 250-300 for a nice place
5.Most common Discipline? Least seen? Trail riding is the most common in my area, and eventing the least common. But more South there is a lot of hunter/jumper

1.What state?
Texas, specifically, the northeast corner of the panhandle.

2.Majority of people Western/English?
Western. Though I have seen a couple of English riders at an open show or two, I don't know any personally.

3.Most common breed?
Stock breeds, predominantly quarter horses, but with a healthy dose of paints thrown in. Some Appaloosas and a handfull of thoroughbreds.

4.Average boarding price?
This I have no idea as there are no boarding barns in my area.

5.Most common Discipline? Least seen?
Uhm...maybe ranch work? Trail riding? Most the folks I know either work on a ranch/feedlot or they rodeo. The folks that don't do that are just pleasure riders that plod around on the trails or around town. The least seen is pretty much anything English, but I guess the least seen western discipline in my area would probably be western pleasure.

As for other details about my area, I'm smack in the middle of the rolling hills type terrain. No pure flat-lands, but no really big mountains/valleys. Weather is known to be bipolar and it is possible to have all 4 seasons in a single day here. The day before yesterday, the high temperature was 107...yesterday it didn't even break 75 and was rainy all day (thank God) LOL. I actually had to break out my light jacket.

There aren't any real common tradition type things around here, just your basic farming/ranching community.

Since smrobs already beat me to tax lol

1. New Mexico
2. Western
3. Stock mostly. Qh, paint, some appys and TB and a few Arabs
4. Don't really have boarding stables/barns around. Mostly just farms and ranches that rent out empty stalls they don't use. Around $250 is what we charge
5. Most common discipline: ranch, rodeo, and competitive trail
Least common: anything English really. You have to go to southern NM or co to get English... I've NEVER seen dressage come to my side of the state

Connecticut
Well I'm still new here so not totally sure on a bigger scale
There seem to be more English than western and what western horses there are seem to also ride English. The local tack stores seem to stock more English than western stuff
Quite a few big Arabian barns around here, all round QH types, warmbloods, TB's
Always plenty of adverts for hunter jumper & equitation competitions. Quite a few dressage competitions. The Arabians are very into saddleseat competitions
A few places are starting to introduce western and cowboy dressage and trail riding/agility type competitions
There was a survey a while ago that showed that most people kept their horses at home. When I was looking at the costs of full board it averaged at about $900 a month
The weather - its a no win I think, Cold winters with snow on the ground from at least the end of December through to March and then it heats up gradually into the 90's but can still be wet so very humid
Lots and lots of trees = lots and lots of biting bugs

1.What state? Arkansas
2.Majority of people Western/English? Western, growing English community.
3.Most common breed? QH, TB, TWH, and lots of Grades.
4.Average boarding price? Boarding is few and faaarrrr between! $300
5.Most common Discipline? Least seen?
Western and lots of Trail Riding, least for sure would be Dressage, Fox Hunting, and Polo.

Horses here are generally hardy, they have to be able to take intense heat and humidity then switch rapidly to cold conditions. (In the fall it can be 100 one day, freezing the next.)

1.What state? SE PA.
2.Majority of people Western/English? My specific area is about an even split. Move 10 mins South to Chester county, and it's mainly English.
3.Most common breed? Quarter Horse, Thoroughbred, Warmblood.
4.Average boarding price? 250 would be about the cheapest, up to $1500+. My average is $300-400, but I am not a serious rider. The overall average is probably the 600-700 range.
5.Most common Discipline? Least seen? Most common, hunters. Least common working horses (cattle etc)
