US Trip 2011!

Not very original, but Sam and I are planning on heading over to the US next year when we turn 21 - With the obligatory visit to Vegas chucked in :]

We haven't really started planning yet, but I figured this would be a good place to get some info, seeing as most of you here are natives!

We would like to go for around a month.

The plan would be to go to Vegas for a few days, and spend the rest of the time road tripping and seeing as much of the country as we can.

So what would be some cost effective ways to do this? Hire a car and stay at hotels? Hire a camper van type thing? Hire a car and camp?

Any 'must see' places? We are both horsey so anything horsey will be well received :]

I would also LOVE to see Canada as well, but have no idea of the logistics - Would it be very difficult to just pop over the border and have a look around for a week or so?

We (Mostly me :]) would also love to meet any of you off here who would like to meet us!

So any ideas, destinations, costings, etc. would be great!

Forgot to say - While touristy stuff is fun, we are more into meeting real people and seeing real places.

Also, being able to see a horse show somewhere with maybe reining or working cow horses would be an absolute ball.

You MUST go to Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. It is breathtaking! New York City, Chicago, man there are too many to name!

I could offer a bed in RI And depending on what is going on at the time of year you come over possibly horse related stuff :) Also if you only make it to NY let me know and lets go riding in Central Park!!!

For an aussie to "pop" over the border to Canada, I never had a problem. Definitely worth it. Quebec is awesome, so is Montreal, and I spent a fair bit of time in Algonquin NP, which was great camping!

Well, Hollywood is fun and if you are over here in California when the penning is going on I'll be sure to tell you where to go! If you wanna see something really fun and horsey come here when extreme mustang makeover comps are happening here in Norco. Crazy what these people do in just 90 days! I know two and both had their mustangs laying down and running barrel courses in just four days... pretty crazy.

When I went over with riding, we went to NYC, Washington DC, Had about 4 hours in LA, and saw a fair bit of Maryland and Virginia.

Ohhhh yep, definitely want to go have a look around in Kentucky - Horse heaven :]

Is RI actually an island? Is that a silly question? Lol! Would love to come visit! And yep, riding in central park is definitely on the to-do list. When we went last time we went for a carriage ride, but actual riding would beat that hands down :]

We will probably do a very touristy tour of Hollywood, and the obligatory photo in front of the big letters - What would a US trip be without that, lol!

Glad to hear it will be easy to get into Canada. Maybe we will spend a few weeks in the US, then the last week or so in Canada and then fly home from there. Will have to check out what is the cheapest!

Its easier to get into Canada then get BACK into the US. I'm in Quebec!! Quebec has GREAT jumpers and eventers!

Come to Canada! It's not hard to switch between the two if you're somewhere close by. I live like 10 mins from the US Border and go there often. :)
The only place I can say I've been to in the USA that I absolutely LOVED was Ashland, Oregon. It's not a horsey place but if you like live theatre, it's AMAZING! They have a Shakespeare festival every year, and it's just the cutest little artsy town.
But with that said, still come to Canada! Haha

Oh gosh, where to start... If you go to California see if you can stop at Sequoia National Park and see the Sequoia trees. They are amazing. The Grand Canyon is also amazing, Yellwostone National Park... It's getting late and my brain is not working so well lol. My family loves to travel so I've been a lot of places but all the vacations are blurring together right now. The only horsey thing we've ever done is Kentucky which has been mentioned. But there are a lot of amazing sights here so I'm sure you'll have no trouble filling your trip with things. And if you decided to stop in Maryland again I'd love a visit!
