A war between Russian and Georgia (I'm little worried about

...my country.

I think everyone has heard about this...

What do you think about it? I almost dropped off my chair when I heard about it (yes I know I'm late because this conflict started even few days ago but I'm not very diligent with regard to watching news).

This is the first time when a little alarm clock really started to ring inside my head. We have a quite long (1340km) mutual border with Russian. Luckily Georgia is far away from here and so on acts of that war is far away from here too. Our last inner unrease was the Civil War in 1918 and we participated in WW II too. After then we have been very peaceful, safety and balanced country. But still.. I know that the reason why Russian attacked to Georgia was purely Georgia's inner thing, not Russian (ok, there was some malpractices in some parts of Georgia but it doesn't empower Russian to attack there). You can might guess what I'm thinking about when I'm living in neighbor of this aggressor big country? If Russian intervenes in Georgia's things is it possible that it intervenes in Finland's things too?

Actually, I don't know if I'm becoming completely nuts but I think that there are some signals which I could construe pretty sinister. There are some frequent offences against our airspace. Some Russian nob have said that their country wouldn't approve it if Finland e.g. Decided to join Nato etc. We got a note regarding some assessment about the WWII some years ago. About Estonia, they had a quarrel with Russian regarding to some sculpture some months ago. The sculpture was a cenotaph to the Red Army. Estonians wanted to move it somewhere else from its adobe and Russians became angry. Ok, Estonians managed to move the sculpture and the quarrel solved. (Estonia is one of our neighboring country which was overrun by the Soviet Union during WWII and which became independent after the SU was broken).

Well, so you can catch that I fear that Russian try to affect its neigboring country. Maybe I have some suspicions which stem from WWII. We was almost overrun by Soviet Union in WWII but we managed scarcely to keep our independence and our western lifestyle. But despite that we had to succumb to them lot. They spent scouts here, we wasn't allowed to say any minus things about the Soviet Union etc. We even had to keep same president incumbent almost thirty years, and only because he got along with heads of the Soviet Union! We become more free after the SU was broken.

No, I don't want offend anyone with this message and I know that there are also good sides in Russian. But like I said, our country is very safety and good place to live and if you eye our history you can understand I'm a little worried about this situation. No, Russian haven't said anything dismaying to us just now but I'm thinking what's the next? If Russian can attack to Georgia, could it attack here too in some day? Oh, and proportion between our resources (army, size of the country etc.) and Russian's resources is something like proportion between resources of mouse and elephant (we're the mouse). This is the first time I really hope that we would have joined to Nato or something. Oh, luckily we're even a member in EU.

My woe is fairly needless, isn't it?

I honestly had heard very little about this. But I have quite a few friends in Russia.

Note... it's Russia. Not Russian. Russian is like the language, the type of food, etc.

I think it's understandable that you would be worried. I mean... try being in Germany, while your parents (Americans) were in a country where the people there weren't too happy about Americans at the time. That's my story. So I kind of see where you're coming from. And living near one of the largest terrorist countries in the world... also my story. It's perfectly understandable.

But while in the 1800's, war was a game, and you not only warred (sp?) with one specific country, you also warred with the ones who chose to be on that one country's side, nowadays if a country goes to war with one country, they tend to be at war with that ONE country, and not a ton of others. Russia may be big, but it's not the most brutal country, and unlike a lot of other countries, they do have their own rules that they follow.

Just keep your eyes and ears open, but don't panic. Good luck with this whole situation!!

(Note... I have friends in both Georgia and Russia... I wonder how they're dealing with this...)

Oh, sorry about my typo.

I can try to explain what happened. I'm not very well versed in this because I'm not there where something happen. But there are some announcements in the media:
There are some unsettled areas in Georgia. Well, Georgia tried to calm those areas with guns in the night between last Thursday and Friday. In the Friday Russia (which support insurgents in those unsettled areas) encroached on there. There have been even bloody shooutouts between Russian and Georgian army since that day. Recently Russia have attacked a little elsewhere in Georgia too.

And about us, actually I'm so young that I'm not able to remember Cold War and time of the Finlandization (the time when the Soviet Union interfere in our country). I was born in 1989 and if I remember right the SU was broken in 1991. But I told about it because it's a thing which might affect to the situation. I'm not in panic because there aren't any threat over here but it thrill when your big and strong neigbor is doing something like this. Actually most Finnishes don't live with daily or any fear of Russia and I'm not too so I can't compare my situation with yours because it isn't so severe (and btw., I'm sorry for it because I believe it isn't fun to e.g. Live close to terrorist country). But have to say that this is the first time when I really started to think if this huge country next to us could might be dangerous.

I hope your friends are doing well.

And I want still to highlight that I don't want offend anyone if there are Russians or friends of that country. I know that regular folk is all innocent when something like this happens so I don't blame them. But I've heard there are still something wrong with some part of their administrative organs.

I don't think the Russians want to expand the war. It would most likely bring NATO against them. But I don't trust Pupin as far as I can throw a battleship, he is ex-KGB. The only thng we can do is pray.

Ugh when I think of Russia I think of their horrible Economy and the "presidents" and dictators in the past.

My honest opinion is don't worry about it. I believe if things escalate between Georgia and Russia, I believe it will be a contained war. I can't see Russia tryin to attack multiple countries and the EU and the United States lettin it happen.

Russia's economy is from last I checked very delicate, so I don't think Russia wants to be rockin the boat TO much because I can see sanctions (sp?) bein placed against them.

Or heck why not supply Georgia with Stingers? Worked in Afganhistan. Sorry this is a joke of course, whatever happens happens.. I personally have nothin against Russia and I know they are a proud country.
