I strongly suggest sticking to name brands. You will always be better off with a brand name, something that is well known because they always stand behind their product.

Sony uses Carl Zesis lens where as Canon uses a different lens. It all depends on the pixel, lens and some other bits and bobs however if you like Sony then go for it.

I use a Canon PowerShot A650 IS. It was like $400, but totally worth it. It takes beautiful pictures, & it's Canon's most advanced digital!

CrazyChester is it possible to show which models are you looking for? I mean

    Sony ---- Canon
    Model --- Model

Then we can see which one is better

I agree with sticking with the name brands.
One thing you to be aware of is the size of the LCD on the back. The larger, the better. I can't see ANYthing in those teeny ones! I know...instant replay and all that...but you still have to be able to see to line up a shot! Many of them also have viewfinders now. I like the large LCD.
I've had great luck with my Sony! It's small, so easy to pack, and takes pretty good pics...
Mine uses AA batteries, but I got rechargeables, so they work well...
