What's Your Favorite Bible Verse?

My aunt died a few hours ago and I need some for her funeral... (And it would make me feel a lot better too...) Please list a verse or two and tell me why you like it and what it means to you.

I don't know of any really...

But I'm really sorry to hear about your aunt.

Oh well... Haven't read the Bible from cover to cover and it's long time ago when I opened that book at all, but reading that topic made me think some verse which tells about creating and pulling things down. I don't remember the exact "location" of the verse but I remember pieces of it. It's still all Finnish in my head, I don't know the exact English translation so don't dare to give what I remember here since it isn't perhaps same in English. It's still quoted at least over here every now and then, do this ring any bell in your head?

I think it'd be a comforting reminder of it that everything (and everyone) takes their time here but we have to let these loved ones to go some day.

Oh, and I'm sorry for your aunt .

Psalm 23

A psalm of David.

1 The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3 he restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness
for his name's sake.
4 Even though I walk
through the valley of the shadow of death, [a]
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD
forever.

It's pretty self evident. The Lord is always with me, and protects me from enemies and eternal death.

Another one:

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

13 But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope.

14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.

15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep.

16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.

17 Then we who are alive and remain, shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.

18 Therefore comfort one another with these words.

My condolences on your family's loss.

Thank you all very much for the kind words.

TaMMa, could Issiah 40 be what you're talking about? Sounds familiar...

Speedracer, I really like that last verse. Very comforting. I've written it down so I can show it to my mom. Maybe it will have the same comforting effect on her.

Yes, there's a lot in 1 Thessalonians that's comforting. That's always been one of my favorites.

It's Ecclesiastes 3:1-8: To everything, there is a season... The Byrds made a song out of it, "Turn, turn, turn", which woldn't be a bad song to play at a funeral.

It wasn't it... checked that.

Yes and thanks Northern! That's what I meant. Ecclesiastes 3:1-8.

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
Time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
Time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
Time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
Time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
Time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
Time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
Time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.
