Bow hunters?

I just started practicing with a bow and am addicted! Even though bow season has already started, I haven't hit the stand yet because I only started practicing today. This season is going to be so much fun! I'm using a High Country Protech bow. It actually belongs to my dad but he doesn't like bow hunting. He doesn't have a mechanical release (at least if he does he doesn't know where it is.) I've kind of figured out that if you don't use one your fingers will get kind of sore after a while. I have to make a target to practice with, today I used a plain piece of wood but the arrows didn't stick to it (probably because it has stayed outside for a while.) Are there any other bow hunters here? If so, can you give me any tips on how to be as accurate as possible?

I plan on practicing a lot! I have a cousin who uses a bow but not on every hunt and besides him there isn't anyone else in the family that likes to bow hunt. I think there is a bale of pine straw just sitting in the yard, would that work the same? If not, then I can get a bale of straw.

We used to stack about 5 bales. Easier than chasing after a lousy shot and maybe not finding the arrow. I made my own so I sure hated to lose one.

Me! I grew up with hunting but I just started hunting with a bow last year. It's awesome. CLaPorte, I didn't know you shot a bow! I've only been able to hunt a little this season so far because I've been out of town so much. We trophy manage about 5000 acres in middle Georgia. I'm so excited this year about bear day here. I WILL be sitting in a stand! I shoot a Diamond Razor Edge and love it.

OP, I would make sure that everything fits you before you really start practicing. Even if the draw length is just a little too long or short for you it could really mess you up and not be as accurate. I would definitely get a release, it's also more accurate and you don't have as big of a chance as you would the draw string slipping out of your hand. If you're shooting practice tips it's fine to shoot at a hay bale. When you start shooting brodheads you will want to use a target. You don't want to dull your blades..An arrow will also shoot slightly different with brodheads than the field points. It just takes a lot of practice and getting used to it..A lot of things are factored in when it comes to really being accurate with a bow and getting better at it. Adding a stablizier will help.. What kind of arrows are you shooting? I'd get a real bow target if you're really wanting to get better.

Targets..Bass Pro Shops carries very good targets, as well as Cabelas..I think you can find some at Walmart but they aren't great.

Azwannapaint is REALLY good, he's awesome if you need any advice. He's really given me some good advice.

I hunted with a recurve up until 6 yrs. Ago when I blew out my shoulder.I was never able to regain the strength in it needed to pull a bow after that..I miss it,but still enjoy going out with my bow hunting brothers. :)
