Well, this sucks. (mildly upsetting/graphic)

I own a small Boer goat breeding operation in Woodford, Virginia. Well, three months ago.. I lost the love of my life, and the most amazing goat in the world. His registered name was THE LAST RIOT. He was the most wonderful thing in the world. Riot knew how to lunge, come when called, free lunge, he walked beautifully and was always with me hen I let him out. He died of heart failure. He was looking sickly towards the end - huge hematomas (spelling?), he had these weird bumpy things on his testicles, his back was swayed, and he had bad legs. It was all a complete fluke. I guess he got all the bad recessive genes. :( His parents have great conformation; his sire is even ennobled!

Two weeks after he died, my one Boer doe gave birth to two beautiful doelings. I'm keeping one baby as my forever goat, and her sister is for sale, due to conformational and temperamental flaws.

Well, last Saturday.. Momma and the babies were out. *We're having construction done, but no workers were scheduled.* ... One of the guys came to trailer his equipment away.. Dee (momma) liked to lay under the machines and trailers for shade.. I guess he didn't see her.. She didn't move in time.. Well, he skull was crushed when I got to her. I feel extremely guilty. I mean, she's livestock. Not a pet. I didn't even like her that much - but I didn't wish death upon her. The kids are fine, and my wether (gelding goat, lol), Jasper is in there, protecting them.

I'm showing the does in the Caroline County Fair, and exhibiting them in the Fredericksburg Fair. I'm hoping to sell the one doe (Iowa) soon.

On the bright side, we're going all the way to Texas for new BLACK boers! It's a lot of dough, though. $500 for a black buck, $1750 for 5 Traditional does - bred to a black buck. Our other goats were priced at $200, although Riot was valued at over $600. It's still a lot. Mr. Powell, the man selling us the goats, said he would also give us a deal on younger kids. I might get a black doeling, black buck, and bred paint does. My goal is to have the first/only ENNOBLED BLACK BUCK in Virginia. Hopefully my dream will come true.

Also.. I want toget my buck - and rename him "THE GREAT CORNHOLIO"

I love Beavis and Butthead. Besides, all the goats names are like "Z33", or "Y195".. So on..

Well I don't know any thing about goats BUT my mom calls me cornhollio all the time. :P

Yeah that's how I felt. But I cried for nearly two hours after she died. I felt so guilty. Depriving my babies of a mother.

I am not sure why your goats would be out if no one is around to at least notice there is a guy with a big truck getting his equipment so you can make sure your goat is not napping under his equipment.

Shrug.

Livestock or pet, they still deserve to be properly taken care of.

I find your attitude about the poor goat a bit callous too.

Getting your head run over would be a horrible way to die, livestock or not.

Hopefully a lesson has been learned.

It sounds like the goat that she loved died at the end with all kinds of weird things going on and no supportive vet care.

You are probably right AB. I was stunned by the "oh well" attitude to the poor doe, didn't connect it with the first story properly.

Certainly sounds like some not ideal animal care practices are occurring.

As for your doe, I'm sorry she died. I'm sorry for her and her babies though, not you.

You talked about your wonderful buck and how devastated you were when he died, yet only added the death of the doe as an afterthought. That's pretty callous, even if she was 'just' livestock.

There was no vet care because she was dead? None of my goats have been let out since this accident - and when it happened we were fixing the horse's fence then we were going to her fence.
A bashing isn't in order here.
In fact - we had the vet out yesterday. She did coggins, a chiropractor check on my mare, put my hard keeper on a new feed routine, and did a health check over all my goats. She's coming back out to do health certificates next month.

Ask an cattle guy - if they would have a vet out if a freak accident happened. My moms an RN and my stepdad is a paramedic. They, as well as I, knew there was no saving her.
