A week ago Sunday my 4 y/o TWH came up lame. She's barely putting any weight on her rear left foot. Called the vet out, he said he "thought" it was an abscess. Told us to soak it in epsom salts, give her Bute and keep it wrapped. It would burst and she'd get relief and everything would be good. She refused Bute. Wouldn't even look at. Not in her food, in a treat, in a syringe in the back of her mouth, none of it. So the vet gave us Banamine to inject which doesn't bother her. However, neither the Bute we could get her to take nor the injections seem to help her pain in the least.
My question is this: it's over a week and still no sign of the abscess, if that's what it is, breaking open or giving her any kind of relief. Is this normal? The vet is coming out for my other horses Wednesday. Should I wait for that or get him back out now? I'm afraid there will be some kind of permanent damage and the fact that he said he "thought" it was an abscess makes me nervous that it could be something more serious? Thanks for your help!
