Do soles actually get thicker?

On a horse being transitioned to barefoot, I know as the new hoof capsule grows in, concavity can develop which ultimately provides the sole more clearance from the ground, but aside from that, can the sole itself grow thicker? If you start with a horse with 9mm sole thickness, 6 months or 6 years later, is it still 9mm thick? Obviously the only way to determine actual thickness is xrays, but if you have info in that area, I would love to hear it.

Most definitely. Bit like our own soles getthing thicker if we go barefoot a lot. Very basically, if you don't use it(effectively), you lose it, but if it's stimulated with more use, it gets thicker & more calloused. True, healthy feet have some degree(depending on type, environment, etc) of concavity to their soles generally but just because a hoof has a concave sole doesn't mean it's necessarily healthy, or that a flatter foot is necessarily sick.
