My horse just got his shoes pulled, and farrier trimmed too close. He is hobbling around and I put my trail easy boots on the front. Question: how long can I leave an easy boot on?
I wouldn't even leave them on 24 hours without adding a solution of Ramey's dilute Lysol or some other anti thrush medication/preventer. Leaving Hondo's boots on just overnight, riding the next day and pulling them in the afternoon is how I first got introduced to thrush. Not the first day but eventually.
It's dark, wet, and no oxygen down in there. That's where thrush really prospers.
22 hours at least 2 hours off each day and treat for thrush/dry out in between. This is not ideal long term however. Foot powder in the boots can help with moisture somewhat.
2. WASH the insides of the boots with hot water and Dawn Dish soap, as soon as you take them off for that few hours break --- every day.
Turn them upside down to dry, somewhere the dogs and cats won't get hold of them.
It helps a LOT, if the boots have drain holes in them so excess water can drain on its own.
3. Re-clean the hooves and apply either "Absorbine Hooflex Thrush Remedy" or "Banixx" every time you put the boots back on.
I have kept my foundered horse in some type of EasyCare boot, 12-16 hours daily most of his life, since 2012.. His hooves/frogs have stayed healthy, following this strict routine.
